I'm sure it's hype, but I've heard 2 references to world war 1, in recent discussion of the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh.
Things I didn't know, Azerbaijan is apparently, a big supporter of Israel. The reports have both been from an Azerbaijan perspective, painting the Azeri's as being very cosmopolitan. And, primarily from the Azeri point of view - emphasizing that this is not a religious conflict. The reporter emphasized that after decades of Soviet rule, both countries a fairly atheistic. (that's the reporter talking, I'm not vouching for the accuracy of the claim - especially as the reporter stated that the Christianity in Armenia is a branch of Orthodox Christianity, which I know, thanks to Black Hills Bruin, to be an inaccurate statement).
The first report speculated that Turkey is bringing in Syrian rebels to fight on behalf of Azerbaijan, and the second one reported that as a fact. A local Azeri spoke of how this conflict is much more dangerous to civilians because the weapons are much bigger this time around. Russia has been selling arms to both sides.
To close the loop, at the end of the report, the reporter said that there is concern that this could lead to a proxy war or direct conflict between Russia and Turkey - I don't know why Russia and Turkey would want to come to blows, and the report didn't say. It's hard for me to believe that either has a strong enough interest in Syria that they would want to come to blows in the Karabakh.
And, the report ended, ominously, that Iran might jump into the fray.
