Wife informed me that what I thought were percocets were oxycodones. Yikes! Hope to not take another one of those.

So it is not over, right? The tooth has been removed, but what to replace it with is still up in the air, right?
My understanding of a root canal must be completely off. I will ask the dentist next time I see him. My root canal from 20 years ago is still holding, so I must be lucky.
Edit: Wasn't there a build up to this? Did this happen out of the blue without warning?

Yikes! That doesn't sound fun at all, Floppy.
My sprained ankle is just the take a couple of Motrin and lie down kind. The ankle is black and blue this morning but doesn't hurt much, assuming I don't try to dance on it or something. My skinned shin on the other leg hurts more. I just waddle around like a penguin and take more Motrin.
I assume most of your residual pain is due to the infection. Hopefully, the antibiotics will take care of that soon.
Feel better.

Did this happen out of the blue without warning? Ya, I've got a hole. The dentist said that they will look at replacing it with a screw-in fake tooth (preferable?) or a bridge. I had a root canal on this tooth 25 years ago? The dentist seemed to have a hard time with it. Then, it blew up about a decade after that, that dentist criticized the work of the prior dentist. Then, it blew up about 2 years ago, that dentist criticized the work of the prior dentist. Then, it blew up Friday night. This dentist criticized the work of the prior dentist. Each in their turn said the prior dentist didn't go deep enough into the root. This guy showed me where the infection was and said that space wasn't supposed to be there. I don't know. This tooth is a molar, cosmetically, it won't be an issue while I wait for the next step. I also have an incisor that has been root canaled twice. Had a bike accident as a kid that damaged the tooth. The dentist showed me that one and showed me how crappy that root canal was and that there is a pocket of infection there. It will have to be redone/come out eventually. As an regular brusher/avid flosser, all this sucks. But, that's life. You're dealt the cards your dealt.

Well, I know you know, you've got to let that thing heal up. You come back on those too quickly and you do permanent damage - it will always be wonky on you. And, if you've got discoloration, you done some damage. I was fine by last night. Crazy how it went from agonizing oxycodone-doesn't-help-much pain to nothing in about 5 hours. Thanks again, all, for letting me vent.

How could so many root canals go so wrong?
So did the pain hit you out of the blue? Dental hygiene is my second religion. I sure hope I get some warning before a major pain hits.

How could so many root canals go so wrong? So did the pain hit you out of the blue? Dental hygiene is my second religion. I sure hope I get some warning before a major pain hits. "How could so many root canals go so wrong?" I have no idea. I have to assume I haven't serially visited incompetent dentists. Something about me, I guess. I think that maybe the first one was challenging, and once the 1st one was messed up, it made it more challenging for the next dentists.? I know the last time (2 years ago) the guy was saying that it was taking wayyyy longer than he expected. I don't really know anything about the mechanics of a root canal. As I'm sure I mentioned, that visit, overall is the biggest downside to the whole saga. That took so long, that the local started wearing off. The guy said "I'll just numb up your nerve a little. It put the needle right. on. the. nerve. It was pure pain. Like a white flash. My whole body contracted. I didn't jerk, because there was a needle in my mouth. They guy said "what was that?" I said "you hit the nerve" He said "I've never seen that happen before." I've never had dental-procedure phobia. But, when the dentist was numbing me up this time and there was a little pain, my heart was racing, and the guy told me to breathe, I think I've got PTSD from the prior guy going Marathon Man on me. "So did the pain hit you out of the blue?" The pain crept up. I was uncomfortable chewing in my left side late Friday afternoon. I kind of felt like, great, it's going to get worse over the weekend. But, I didn't rush out to my regular dentist - they don't do any major procedures, and I figured it would be the next week before I could get into see anyone that could do anything. It didn't occur to me until Sunday (as the pain got worse) to go to a walk-in to get started on anti-biotics. Even Sunday a.m. the pain wasn't a big motivator, but the swelling in a part of my cheek that was distal from the tooth scared me. Then Sunday afternoon, it all kicked in. The pain killer from the walk in was doing nothing, so I took a flyer and called my acquaintances, the dentists. Texted them a pic of my face and the inside of my mouth and they jumped into action. So, the short answer is that it was my bad luck for it to start on a Friday afternoon - I knew something was going sideways then. And, my incredible good fortune that it didn't happen a few days earlier when I was at a remote campground, no cell service, 1,000 miles from home. And, my incredible good fortune that we happen to be friendly with some other parents from my kids' school who are dentists and could help me on a Sunday, get me in on Monday.
