It hurts as bad as anything I've had. Getting little sympathy. Son: is it contagious? me: no Son: good!
Sister: at least it didn't happen on your trip
Root canal tomorrow. I've had at least 2 rc's on this tooth before. Dentist said "you will lose the tooth." I don't know what that means. A gap with a hole? Yeehawwwww!
I do feel fortunate that we know a couple that are both dentists and they are going to fit me in tomorrow a.m. I won't sleep tonight. Worse when I broke my leg (it was bent), or my thumb, or split my head open or broken ribs. Even worse than an ear infection! :-)

Hang in there bro. You're bigger than the abscess!

Wait. How do you have multiple root canals on the same tooth? That is like getting the same arm amputated twice, isn't it? I have had one root canal done and the next move if that tooth goes bad is a bridge, not another root canal. At least that is my understanding. Am I missing something?
Best of luck. That is not fun at all.

The tooth will be gone. I'm not sure.

i had a RC and maybe 3 other fillings about 4 years ago. it was terrible. i think it's a RC when they kill the nerves under the tooth and replace the tooth with a fake one. the RC took multiple visits; tooth pulled, roots killed, fake tooth installed....good luck

In my case, they killed the nerves, removed them, and filled the void something else but the tooth remained intact. The whole point is to save the tooth. This procedure took place when a new crown didn't take the pain away. The root canal was almost 20 years ago, and (knock on wood) it still feels fine. The crown had to be replaced a few years ago though.

He will eithe pull the tooth then build a bridge to replace it, or he will drill out the nerve to the tooth then cap it, a root canal. Good as new. Hope for the root canal. If he pulls the tooth he will have to grind down the two teeth on both sides of the "hole" then install 3 fake teeth, like caps.

Sprained my ankle jogging this morning. Had to limp home, about a mile.
Reading about your tooth made me feel better. 😉
Still sorry to hear about it though.

I had a hangnail once.
Humor aside, most personal dentists sublet the root canals to an endodontist, for whom it is like playing chopsticks to a pianist. My only root canal, in a life of only 3 cavities in my grown-up teeth, was dreaded, since my decay-ridden evil sister had told tales of near suicidal pain. To my surprise, it was painless and I haven't had another cavity in 34 years since.
Hope all turns out well though!

Grant73, my root canal experience was like yours. I was conditioned to think of "root canal" with dread. My very competent dentist gave me a referral and when it was done my reaction was "that's it?". I congratulate you on your cavity record. I wish I could say the same.

I've had a couple of root canals before. What bothered me about them wasn't any direct pain - it was the uncomfortable access, positioning and holding pieces in my mouth for all that time the procedure was going on.

Well, 1st, the dental assistant said you can have more than one root canal.
Yes, I was looking forward to the root canal, I've had about 4 or 5, and ya, the root canal relieves the pain. Told my kids that this morning, so that if they ever have to have one, they understand that the rc is what takes away the pain.
So, ya, to recap, I was in really bad pain. Took a percocet at 10 last night. Woke up at 4:30 in pain, tried to go back to sleep. Had to take another one (I've had two nail beds removed and didn't take anything after - I've always thought I had a high tolerance).
The Dentist did a scan, most of the left side of my face was involved. My left sinus was closed off with pus. The prior root canals had not gone deep enough, and there was no way to save the tooth. I thought, ok, they'll get the tooth out, clean it out, and everything will be fine. On the way home, the local must have started to wear off (it's like a 10 minute car ride). The pain from Sunday was about x3. I was amazed. I couldn't swag down a percocet fast enough. Like I was getting irritated at how long it was taking my wife to walk to the front door with the keys.
For about an hour, I was kind of pacing with pain. I got an ice bag out, and put it on my cheek and laid down to ride it out. After about 3 hours I got a bit of a nap in. And, yay, it doesn't really hurt now. I still have a swollen place on my cheek, which is infected, and the bone under it hurts if I press it. So .... don't press it. I assume/hope the remaining course of antibiotics will clear that up.
It would be great to get through the night w/o another pain pill. But, I imagine I'll take one more. I never take pain pills after procedures. Today was crazy.
So, the dentist packed the hole with artificial bone and says that if it takes, we can screw a fake tooth in there. If not, I'll get a bridge.
note bene, at one point last night, my son came over unprompted and gave me a hug. So, I did get some sympathy. :-)
Thanks for giving me a place to vent!
Oh, and if I was ever tortured for any reason, I'm spilling the beans right off. Pull one of my teeth, and I don't want no more of that!
Which is really weird. Had 4 impacted wisdom teeth pulled when I was 18. Had oral surgery to remove 4 other teeth in middle school. Never had anything hurt like it hurt today.
Peace y'all!
But, B2BB, I know a sprained ankle can hurt like hell - hope you heal quickly!
