I got the idea from the linked article, and it makes some sense. Defending white supremacy played a significant role in electing Trump, and now white people are dying because of this. Anti-mask people overlap with white supremacists. You don't see black people demonstrating against masks. We often wonder why so many people vote against their own interest. A factor is the theory that liberals are taking their money and giving it to minorities. Many belive that whites are the victims of discrimination. Clearly not all Trumpists are white supremacists, but a significant number support policies and politicians who promise to maintain their white privilege, even if the promise is in coded language. This is my take on his idea.

tRump's GOP only has 3 real constituencies; the 1%, the religious right, and working class white people. the 1% don't care about tRump being a racist because they make $ under tRump and a lot of it. the religious right is primarily motivated by abortion and historically has no interest in helping minorities. at best for them, they passively support the racism. personally i think they are very actively racist and always have been, but don't want to start that fight. the last group, the uneducated whites, they HATE the idea that government is going to give tax dollars to lazy and undeserving black and brown people. these people LOVE tRump and his racism.
in broader strokes, in america, land of emotional and stupid people, progress is always 2 steps forward and one step back. the 60's saw progress in a lot of ways. reagan's nonsense of the 80's was the result. the 90's saw progress, bush's attempt to be reagan II was the response. Obama was progress, we're paying for it with the Bunker B!tch. 'merica.

Blacks and Hispanics are disproportionately affected by Covid. Only 2% of Maine is black but they account for a quarter of Covid victims. I would not be surprised if that is factored into Trump's Covid policy or lack thereof.

The public hates his approach to COVID. But he keep doing it.

I think you nailed it with that description but I would add 2 more factions of rump lovers--the military/police and those whites who genuinely despise liberals and will overlook ALL of rump's failures so they can hold the scotus and generally sock it to the left at every turn. But you're right in that most of them are closet racists.
