So the ex-felons in Florida lost their case at the Supreme Court, which means if they owe any money to the courts, they will not be eligible to vote? Why can't someone like Bloomberg just go ahead and pay that off? I mean, the guy's a billionaire, Florida is essential to Trump's defeat? So why not?
Also, please tell me that the Democratic Party is organizing in all these red states that enforce voter IDs to make sure that every voter has an ID, provide weekly bus services between these neighborhoods and the nearest DMV, which will invariably be really far away (by design). Knock on doors to make sure they all have their IDs. Because they can't keep relying on legal means to fight voter suppression, some concrete action needs to be taken.
Also, a lawyer needs to be available at every poor and overcrowded voting place to make sure that a court order to keep the place open is observed.
This is going to be one helluvan uphill battle and frankly, you guys know me, I don't trust the Democrats to really have their crap together, wrt what's coming.

There are about 1.7 million disenfranchised felons. I don't know the total they owe. But if it averages, say, $10,000 each, that's $17 billion. That's pretty rich even for Bloomberg.
If there are better numbers somewhere on the dollars, I'd be glad to see them.

By the way, this disenfranchises 23% of Florida's black voters.

The courts cannot tell them what they owe in most instances so they cannot clear the debt. Classic Catch-22 “You have to pay your debt.” “What do I owe?” “I can’t tell you.” “So how do I vote if you can’t tell me what I owe?” “By paying your debt.”

I googled it. Looks like the average amount an ex-felon owes is either $1,000 or between $700 and $800, depending on the source. That would make it $1.7 billion ... an amount he was ready to spend to win the election. The man's self worth is $60 billion right now.

I am sure Repubs will claim it is buying votes. Of course, it isn't.

Blindness, thanks for the numbers. It's far less than I imagined. The expense would be even lower if it were offered as a matching gift.

The expense would be even lower if it were offered as a matching gift. Further ... he does not need to take on all of it. I am sure he has friends with deep pockets who would like to pitch in. Heck we could even start a gofundme campaign or something for an organization willing to do this.
The thing that bugs me is that a major party in this country does not seem to understand what is the best way toy overcome obstacles thrown at you. Everyone is so plugged into working through the courts system, these simple work-arounds just don't seem to be explored any more.

I am sure Repubs will claim it is buying votes. Of course, it isn't. Sure. The best way to avoid that is to invite the Republican Party to the effort. "Come, let's work through the voter id issue in a cooperative and transparent manner because we all believe in democracy and the right to vote, right? Right?"
You know, make it public so that the handful of people left in the party who can still be shamed into anything are shamed into participation.

There are already several charities in Florida to help pay for ex-felons. I have no idea if they are legitimate.
