The odd thing here is Jones County was the most pro-Union county in Mississippi during the Civil War. I've heard longer, more-detailed versions of the story. A shorter version of the story is on the lower left of the link: jones.msghn.org/ One story I thought I had heard is that Jones County voted about 10-1 against succession in 1961, but the delegate voted for succession at the state convention because of pressure from other counties.

I'm sure an unsupervised election commissioner can find a way to purge or suppress those unwanted votes.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm reading this as you making the assumption that this issue is particular to Jones County? Uh, that's a reach, to say the least. I'm sure you can find an example for every state in the union. www.cnn.com/2019/12/24/opinions/wisconsin-voter-suppression-democracy-danger-wikler/index.htmlIf anything, to identify it as a "Jones County" problem is to play into the Pub's efforts to suppress Dem votes everywhere. As an aside, my dad grew up in and around Jones County. When I was a child, he told me with pride about the Free State of Jones.

I'm not trying to claim Jones County isn't involved in voter suppression. I was just making a historical anecdote on Jones County. Actually from what I've read of it, Jones County (which was quite poor in 1861 and had few slaves, thus wasn't much motivated to succession) had been somewhat shamed in Mississippi due to their lack of Confederate-conformity. So it may have caused them to overreach (in comparison to Mississippi) during the segregation years. There may be similar stories in the Appalachian regions of east Tennessee and northern Georgia.

I wasn't clear. I read it as you feeling that voter suppression was a problem unique to Jones County. I was wrong. Anyway, never my life have I ever heard anyone shaming Jones County or the residents thereof for lack of confederate-conformity.

The problem clearly isn't limited to one person or one county. The problem is you can find racists down the block, wherever you live.

Wow. Embarrassing admission time. I interpreted the quote in the OP to be in support of getting out and helping African Americans to register. It didn't register with me that this was a bigot inciting fear. I thought she was on the team.
That was very stupid of me.
