H.W. seems like he was a compassionate, ethical, and empathetic human being; so remarkable for an ex-operative or at least manager in the CIA; his wartime exploits seemed quite brave and selfless too. And I am a lifelong Dem myself. That's why many diehard Reps always saw him as a "wimp" (as he didn't boldly stand up for the more conservative half of the Reps). Well, that and some never forgave him for challenging Reagan in 1980.
