preview of how the debates will likely go. It was a disgusting, non-stop vomit of lie after lie.
"Joe Biden and the mob on the left want to prevent you from going to church but protect the rioters and looters."
"If Joe Biden is elected the left will launch a full scale assault on Americans. They will expel anyone who disagrees with them."
"Biden is a trojan horse for socialism."
"Biden and Obama built the cages for the children at the border."
"Every policy that has hurt black Americans for half a century Joe Biden has supported."
As I've said several times it will be impossible to debate the rump. You can't debate non-stop lies and propaganda. Biden will have to ignore most of what the rump says and focus only on the questions posed by the moderator. Otherwise rump will turn it into a circus.

Andy, that is exactly what I think. It's the only way it can work. It would be great if the mods could have a fact checker to immediately rate each reply but that won't happen. Rump would refuse to debate if it did happen.

I sincerely wish it would be smart for Joe to say Trump is beneath his dignity to debate with. 'Course it wouldn't be smart. Can't happen. But where does it actually say a candidate has to agree to X number of debates? Then comes Ben's last sentence.... Bingo, demand the fact checking. Let Trump refuse to debate. Okay, I admit the fantasy -- we'll just have to see what happens. Sheesh. "Let's slow down the testing! It turns up too many cases!"

If Biden's lead holds, he should skip the debates. He can say there is no point in debating a liar.
And if he does debate he should pretend Trump isn't there. Say at the beginning he won;t respond to non-stop lies, and ignore everything Trump says. It will drive him batty.

I would be hesitant to encourage a repeat of Hilary's "I'm a football head coach up 14 pts in the middle of the 4th Qtr" strategy during the stretch run of the campaign.

I don't think Hilary was ever up as much as Biden is right now. In June, her lead was half of Biden's. And her lead was far less stable. Also, Hilary made some dumb moves, but I don't recall her ever letting up on the campaign. This isn't 2016. RCP in 2016But I still see no reason to shake up the race with a big lead. Why appear on the same stage as the mask-less wonder?

And then there was Clemens: "Never argue with a fool lest the crowd can't tell the difference between you." Or some such.

I think Joe is a gamer and will negotiate favorable circumstances and them show Trump for the fool he is in the manner I mentioned above. His team will prep him to listen for an outlandish lie and establish himself as the adult in the room by pointing out that a debate is a waste of time if Trump is going to make bald faced lies.

"I think if it hadn't been for his false advertising the last three days, we would have beaten him," Dole said on primary night.
In a tense notional TV interview, an anchorman asked Dole if he had anything to say to Bush, who was also on camera. "Tell him to stop lying about my record," Dole snapped. --------------- This is sometimes said to have cost Dole the nomination that year. An angry response to a lie often comes across badly. Can Biden hold it together?
Trump can lose it, because that fit with his brand.

I have always regretted that the media even term these events "debates." They are obviously less a debate between the protagonists than a series of "gotcha" questions cobbled together by editors and thrown at the candidates by the news-heads. Say what you will about the difficulties of the UK parliamentary ("Hey, this is a great time for us to CALL AN ELECTION!") format, just watch "Question Time" in Commons on C-Span, to see what real debating is like. We do not have debates, neither on TV nor on Capitol Hill.

Good point, Grant, And our "debates" tell the public nothing about the candidates' ability to govern.

We do not have debates, neither on TV nor on Capitol Hill. And almost none of the candidates are honest with their statements in debates. Bernie is a prime example. There is absolutely no way he could have ever gotten congress to pass hardly any of the things he proposed. Rather than present realistic and honest proposals that can actually be accomplished during a 4 yr term all of the candidates promise pie in the sky actions that can not be done. Maybe they could in an alternate universe where the house and senate was populated by people with the same mindset as the candidate AND the conserv voters would support it. Never happen. Of course rump's wall is another example but they all do it.

So much for my recommendation. The Biden campaign has agreed to 3 debates.
