I sent this video to Ben:
His response was:i love chris rock. very funny video but very racist. says it's ok for cops to assault citizens just for being insulted or for any non combative encounter.
My response: Chill out, it's just a comedy routine, it's funny, not serious
Ben: it clearly sends the message that if any of those things are done you deserve to have the shit beat out of you.
Me: No, it absolutely doesn't, it's worded to make you laugh not to teach you a lesson.
So, who has the right take on this, is it racist or just a funny routine ?

I'm with you, Tampa, I think it's OK. Part of the essence of comedy is breaking the rules and being provocative. If comedians behaved themselves all the time then they wouldn't be so funny. BTW, that Chris Rock bit is six years old. Dave Chappelle has been doing some equally provocative stuff more recently and he has been criticized for it. But perhaps that just means that he has been stepping over the line, as comedians will do.

This is just fine. A little naive perhaps, but I see no problems with it. It's satire that bites both ways. It does not condone the police beating up the driver. It says that's what they're going to do so don't give them the reason to do those.
I think it is a bit naive because we have seen cases where none of that is enough for the person to be shot (Philando Castille) or be thrown into jail (Sandra Bland) while doing everything right. If they are out to get you for whatever reason, they will.

I think it's funny too. But given the current state of the country, it's bound to be controversial.

It's black people lampooning and calling out their own. Black people's self deprecating humor is great, but as an outsider, I appreciate it for what it is and keep my mouth shut. I would never parrot Rock's routine here. It just isn't my place.
Rock did a similar comedy sketch below, this time with the n-word. Notice the audience is all black. As an outsider, it is not for me to decide. I've seen these clips and others in a similar vein circulated among white people who ask loudly why blacks can use the n-word, but they can't. Shut. The. F. Up.

F. Up. I have no desire to say that word. But, can we acknowledge that the use of the word is super divisive? Back in the day, I bought a 50 Cent cd, I liked that "hey shorty" song. Bought the CD. I'm driving through Newport, got it cranked up. Then a song came on where the Nword was like every third word. "word word word word N-WORD! word word word word N-WORD!" I was like "oh, shit! I can't listen to that! I can't let anyone hear that! Then, I thought wait, I'm not allowed to listen to 50 Cent?" As I pondered, I sat at a light. A black man pulled up next to me. Being self conscious about the song, I looked over. The guy gave me the most disgusted, demeaning look I've ever gotten. I felt like, wait, I can't listen to 50 Cent? I threw the cd away. When we were at a water park in Mississippi, my son, then about 5, said "dad, what is that word those kids keep saying?" I just played dumb. What am I supposed to say to my kid? Yes, these are all laughably trivial experiences. A manager in MLS was hired from the Netherlands. Several black players were listening to a rap song in the locker room. The manager from the Netherlands sang along with them and got fired. Again, I have no desire to say that word.

First off there is no "right" take on this. It is all a matter of opinion to which we are all entitled.
Personally, in THIS environment I really don't think many blacks would find this funny at all.
Just because we (including me) find it funny that doesn't make it any less offensive or inappropriate when hundreds of thousands of people all over the world are protesting exactly these situations. And while it is satire it clearly places the blame on blacks for doing dumb things and not the cops, and that was likely the intent of the person who originally began forwarding it.
