The Truce Will Set You Free --- No Longer
Israeli fighter jets hit targets in the Gaza Strip minutes after a weeklong truce expired on Friday, as the war with Hamas resumed in full force. Black smoke billowed from the besieged territory and Israel dropped leaflets over parts of southern Gaza urging people to leave their homes, suggesting it was preparing to widen its offensive.
Renewed hostilities heightened concerns for the about 140 hostages who remain in Gaza, after more than 100 were freed as part of the truce. Qatar, which has served as a mediator along with Egypt, said negotiators from both sides were still trying to reach an agreement on restarting the ceasefire.

I Prefer My Pizza Without the Gate
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) wrote the foreward for and promoted a book full of extremist conspiracy theories and homophobic slurs, reported CNN's KFILE on Friday.
"Written by Scott McKay, a local Louisiana politics blogger, the book, 'The Revivalist Manifesto,' gives credence to unfounded conspiracy theories often embraced by the far-right – including the 'Pizzagate' hoax, which falsely claimed top Democratic officials were involved in a pedophile ring, among other conspiracies," reported Andrew Kaczynski and Em Steck. "The book also propagates baseless and inaccurate claims, implying that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts was subjected to blackmail and connected to the disgraced underage sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein."
Among other things, the book also defended right-wing podcaster Joe Rogan for using the N-word, called poor voters “unsophisticated and susceptible to government dependency,” claimed President Barack Obama's race was his "chief selling point," complained that the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) used his time being tortured as a prisoner of war “as a political get-out-of-jail-free card,” and slurred Pete Buttigieg for his sexual orientation.

Trolls Tricked the QAnon Queen’s Followers Into Volunteering to KillSomething strange happened earlier this week when the QAnon Queen attempted to use a new tool for her followers to organize online. Shortly after Romana Didulo, a Canadian QAnon cult leader with a large following, made a new group on Telegram called the “Volunteer Peace, Prosperity & Love Officers” in the hopes of organizing her followers by region, a rather violent subgroup popped up. It was to recruit "Military Tribunal officers" who would work as “judge, jury, and executioner” for the cult. Quickly her most dedicated followers stepped up, declaring they would step up to kill for her. “I would like to get THE SHOW on the road as much as the next person,” one member wrote, referring to mass executions of the cult's enemies that they have long promised, but never acted on. “But I am not sure that is something I would want to have on my conscience. That being said I also know this needs to be done.” The group then began to brainstorm ways to execute their enemies while keeping their conscience clear—leaving them out in the Arctic to be eaten by polar bears was one that got a lot of love. Eventually, the sub-group was trolled into oblivion by an anti-Didulo group and shut down. But the thing is, the sub-group wasn’t even created by Didulo but by a group of kind-hearted trolls dedicated to taking her down and trying to save her followers from her exploitation.

Nuclear Fusion is Always Just 20 Years Away.
The world's biggest experimental nuclear fusion reactor in operation was inaugurated in Japan on Friday, a technology in its infancy but billed by some as the answer to humanity's future energy needs.
Fusion differs from fission, the technique currently used in nuclear power plants, by fusing two atomic nuclei instead of splitting one.
The goal of the JT-60SA reactor is to investigate the feasibility of fusion as a safe, large-scale and carbon-free source of net energy -- with more energy generated than is put into producing it.
The six-storey-high machine, in a hangar in Naka north of Tokyo, comprises a donut-shaped "tokamak" vessel set to contain swirling plasma heated up 200 million degrees Celsius (360 million degrees Fahrenheit).
It is a joint project between the European Union and Japan, and is the forerunner for its big brother in France, the under-construction International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).
The ultimate aim of both projects is to coax hydrogen nuclei inside to fuse into one heavier element, helium, releasing energy in the form of light and heat, and mimicking the process that takes place inside the Sun.
Researchers at ITER, which is over budget, behind schedule and facing major technical problems, hope to achieve nuclear fusion technology's holy grail, net energy.

Previous Guy's Court Calendar Just Got a Lot Busier
A federal appeals court on Friday rejected former President Donald Trump's bid to dismiss civil claims seeking to hold him to account for the Jan. 6 riot, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol, denying his claims of presidential immunity, at least for now.
"The sole issue before us is whether President Trump has demonstrated an entitlement to official-act immunity for his actions leading up to and on January 6 as alleged in the complaints. We answer no, at least at this stage of the proceedings," a panel of judges from the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for Washington, D.C. said in its ruling.
The three judges noted that Trump is alleged to have instigated the riot during the course of his re-election campaign, and said, "When a first-term President opts to seek a second term, his campaign to win re-election is not an official presidential act."
The ruling allows a large number of lawsuits seeking to hold Trump accountable for the deadly riot to move forward. The cases had all been stayed while the appeals court weighed the immunity issue, which they said would have to be revisited in the lower courts.

Lonesome George Needs a Replacement
Voters in New York's 3rd Congressional District will soon choose a new representative after the House voted to expel Republican Rep. George Santos on Friday by a 311-114 margin, with 105 Republicans joining 206 Democrats to eject the scandal-plagued freshman. 112 Republicans and two Democrats voted against ousting Santos, while two other Democrats voted "present."
This Long Island-based constituency, which includes northern Nassau County and a small portion of Queens, supported Joe Biden 54-45 in 2020, and Santos' infamy could drag down the eventual Republican nominee.
However, the GOP is hoping a fresh face will give them the chance to hold on in a region that has swung their way since Biden's inauguration. Republicans flipped the Nassau County executive and district attorney posts in 2021, while Bloomberg's Greg Giroux reports that Republican Lee Zeldin carried the district 56-44 last year against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul. Republicans also performed well in local elections last month.
Democrats will have a chance to reverse that trend—and flip this seat—when the special election to replace Santos takes place in February. A 2021 state law gives Hochul 10 days to call a special election once a seat becomes vacant, and the contest must happen 70 to 80 days afterward. That points to an election on either Feb. 20 or 27.
However, there won't be any primaries beforehand. Rather, it will be up to local leaders in each party to pick their nominees, with Nassau holding sway since it's home to three-quarters of the 3rd's denizens, according to calculations by Daily Kos Elections. But anyone hoping to win a full two-year term in the next Congress will have to compete in the regularly scheduled primary, which is set for June 25.
Meanwhile Locals Hope Santos Clown is Not Coming Back to Town
Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) accused his now-former GOP colleague George Santos of stealing his and his mother’s personal credit card information to make illegal contributions to his campaign — the latest shocking allegation leveled against the indicted ex-New York House member who was expelled from Congress Friday.
“Late yesterday on the floor, I alluded to a personal impact of Rep. Santos’ conduct,” Miller wrote in a letter to colleagues Friday morning. “Earlier this year, I learned that the Santos campaign had charged my personal credit card — and the personal credit card of my mother — for contribution amounts that exceeded FEC limits. Neither my mother nor I approved these charges nor were aware of them. We have spent tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees in the resulting follow-up.”

Previous Guy Gets Around Gag Order in a Way That Makes Me Want to Gag.On Thursday, the Supreme Court of the State of New York reinstated a narrow gag order against Donald Trump that prohibits him from making statements about court staff. The order was originally put in place by Judge Arthur Engoron after Trump repeatedly attacked law clerk Allison Greenfield, including falsely claiming that she was the “girlfriend” of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Trump’s statements have been tied to multiple threats on the life of both Greenfield and Engoron. In response, Trump posted a series of false claims about Engoron’s wife, using a widely debunked series of images posted by conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer. Trump also reposted the images along with statements sure to generate threats against Engoron’s wife and family. Not only is this vivid confirmation that Trump is a low-life POS, it’s also an obvious threat aimed at every prosecutor, judge, or other member of the justice system who tries to hold him to account for his crimes. Loomer’s original “exclusive” was based on posting several images from an account on X (formerly known as Twitter) that had messages indicating Trump was a criminal. Online observers immediately noted that Loomer had no evidence that the posts had been made by Engoron’s wife. The following day, Newsweek spoke with Dawn Engoron, who made it clear she had no connection to the account Loomer cited. New York's Office of Court Administration has since confirmed that the account did not belong to Engoron’s wife, that Dawn Engoron doesn’t even have a Twitter account, and that she never posted the images Loomer used. None of this stopped Loomer and her followers from continuing to spread the images and elaborating on lies about Engoron, his wife, and his family. On Wednesday, Trump began reposting the images on his Truth Social platform. He kept right on posting them on Thursday, even after the gag order had been reinstated.

Biden Wants to Get the Lead Out
Most U.S. cities would have to replace lead water pipes within 10 years under strict new rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency as the Biden administration moves to reduce lead in drinking water and prevent public health crises like the ones in Flint, Michigan and Washington, D.C.
Millions of people consume drinking water from lead pipes and the agency said tighter standards would improve IQ scores in children and reduce high blood pressure and heart disease in adults. It is the strongest overhaul of lead rules in more than three decades, and will cost billions of dollars. Pulling it off will require overcoming enormous practical and financial obstacles.
“These improvements ensure that in a not too distant future, there will never be another city and another child poisoned by their pipes,” said Mona Hanna-Attisha, a pediatrician and clean water advocate who raised early alarms about Flint.
The Biden administration has previously said it wants all of the nation’s roughly 9 million lead pipes to be removed, and rapidly. Lead pipes connect water mains in the street to homes and are typically the biggest source of lead in drinking water. They are most common in older, industrial parts of the country.

The Long Reach of Urkaine
Ukraine's security service has blown up a rail connection deep inside Russia, a senior official has told the BBC.
Successive explosions are said to have happened on trains running first through a tunnel and then on a bridge in Russia's far east.
Russia has opened an investigation into a "criminal case of terrorism" after the attacks on the Baikal Amur mainline running to the border with China.
The extent of the damage has not been verified by the BBC.
Ukrainian sources said that the intention was to "disable" an important piece of infrastructure that the Russians sometimes use for military purposes.
War in maps: Ukraine claims foothold across key river Zelensky is up for re-election. But can Ukraine vote? After the first incident in the Severomuysky tunnel, on Wednesday evening, Russian railway officials said that crew had noticed smoke in a fuel tank and the train was stopped.
At 15km, Severnomuysky is the longest railway tunnel in Russia and lies in the region of Buryatia, north of Mongolia.

Why on Earth did Ron DeSantis think it was a good idea to debate Gavin Newsom? There's nothing people love more than watching a likely catastrophe live. Case in point: around 40,000 Texans lined up to watch two trains crash into each other in 1896 for a marketing ploy by the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad that ended in death and disaster. Similarly, on Thursday night, millions tuned into or watched highlights of an unnecessary debate between Republican presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and California Gov. Gavin Newsom. No humans died on Thursday — unlike the "Crash at Crush" — but the night was still a trainwreck for DeSantis' presidential campaign from the very beginning.

At Least they Aren't Saying "Happiness is a Warm Gun"
Millennials want half a million dollars annually to be happy. But that's a lot higher than what both older and younger generations want, per a recent survey.
In mid-November, financial services company Empower released the results of a survey conducted by The Harris Poll in August that asked 2,034 Americans aged 18 and over if they think there is a price ot happiness. The average respondent said they think they need a $284,167 annual salary to be happy, and for millennials, that amount was much higher at $525,000.
Meanwhile, Gen Z said it would take a $128,000 salary for them to be happy, Gen X said they would be happy with $130,000, and boomers estimated the amount at $124,000.

North Carolina Finally Gets Some Sense
A decade after the federal government began offering expanded Medicaid coverage in states that opted to accept it, hundreds of thousands of adults in North Carolina are set to receive benefits, a development that boosters say will aid hospitals and local economies in addition to the long-term uninsured.
North Carolina elected officials agreed this year to expand Medicaid, which will provide the government-funded health insurance to adults ages 19 to 64 who make too much money to receive traditional Medicaid but generally not enough to benefit from public subsidies available for private health insurance. The federal government will pay 90% of the cost, as stipulated under the 2010 Affordable Care Act.
More than 600,000 North Carolinians are ultimately expected to qualify, with roughly half to be automatically enrolled as of Friday. That means they’ll be able to get annual checkups, prescription drugs and other services with little or no out-of-pocket expenses.
