I’m writing a theatre piece about puns. It’s a play on words.
You've Got to be Joking
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan appeared to mock Trump attorney John Lauro on Monday during a hearing on whether she should impose a gag order on former President Donald Trump.
As described by Politico's Josh Gerstein, Lauro tried to argue that no new restrictions on Trump's ability to publicly discuss the criminal charges being leveled against him were needed on the grounds that the ones already put in place are "working."
According to Gerstein, Chutkin "literally [laughed] in his face" in response and said, "I have to take issue with you, Mr. Lauro."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
She then proceeded to go through some of Trump's incendiary social media posts that have been flagged by the government, including his now-infamous call for the execution of Mark Milley, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Chutkin also drew laughs from people in the courtroom when she referenced Trump's Truth Social post referring to Washington D.C. as "filthy and crime-ridden" after Lauro informed the court that he had once served as an advisory neighborhood commissioner in the nation's capital.
Trump was recently hit with a gag order in a separate case after the former president spread an evidence-free claim that a New York law clerk in Judge Arthur Engoron's court is Sen. Chuck Schumer's (D-NY) "girlfriend."

Einstein vs Euler: Two Men Enter. One Man Leaves.Gravitational distortion of time helps tell modified gravity apart from a dark forceWith his theory of General Relativity in 1915, Albert Einstein revolutionized how we think about our universe. Rather than the cosmos simply providing the room for the planets and stars to orbit each other, space and time themselves were now dynamical entities in one ever-evolving play with matter and light. Einstein’s equations described how stars, galaxies and all other matter curve or warp space and time. The galaxies and the light rays then travel in this distorted space-time according to the equation provided by the 18th-century Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler. With the help of modern telescopes, we can watch this dance and compare it to the choreography scripted by the two giants of science, Einstein and Euler. But can we differentiate a universe where Einstein’s equations were violated from a universe where Euler’s equation were modified? In other words, if what we observed with telescopes disagreed with what Einstein and Euler prescribed, would we be able to tell which one of the two was wrong?

This Election is No Polish Joke
Polish opposition leader Donald Tusk declared the beginning of a new era for his country after opposition parties appeared to have won enough votes in Sunday's parliamentary election to oust the governing nationalist conservative party.
That party, Law and Justice, has bickered with allies and faced accusations of eroding rule of law at home in its eight years in power. It appeared that voters were mobilized like never before, voting in even greater numbers than when the nation ousted the communist authorities in 1989. In some places people were still in line when polling officially closed, but all were allowed to vote.
If the result predicted by an exit poll holds, Law and Justice won but also lost. It got more seats than any other party but not enough to be able to lead a government that can pass laws in the legislature.
The Ipsos exit poll suggested that Law and Justice obtained 200 seats. Its potential partner, the far-right Confederation got 12 seats, a showing the party acknowledged was a defeat.
It also showed that three opposition parties have likely won a combined 248 seats in the 460-seat lower house of parliament, the Sejm. The largest of the groups is Civic Coalition, led by Tusk, a former prime minister and former European Union president. It won 31.6% of votes, the exit poll said.

We Got $45 Million ... What? Nevermind!
Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign reported third-quarter receipts of $24.5 million to the Federal Election Commission on Sunday — a little more than half of the $45.5 million number it bragged about earlier this month.
The discrepancy may suggest that it is becoming more expensive for the coup-attempting former president’s fundraising committee, which sends cash to both his presidential campaign and to a separate entity covering many of his legal bills, to collect donations from his millions of followers.
Meanwhile, In the Real World ...
Biden and the DNC raised $71 million in the third quarter, the president's campaign said, as Democrats grow their war chest heading into 2024.
The groups, and their joint fundraising committees, finished the quarter with $91 million on hand, $14 million more than what they had going into it, the Biden campaign said. That sum came from nearly 500,000 donors.
The campaign also said that 97% of the groups' donations came from small-dollar donors, people giving less than $200 -- matching the same rate as in quarter two. The Biden campaign said the average donation was $40.

I Think Universities Should Be Places For the Open Exchange of Ideas. Censoring is Wrong Whether It is Huntsman or Gov DeathSentence.
Former US Ambassador Jon Huntsman blasted the University of Pennsylvania’s response to antisemitism and is promising to halt his family’s donations to the prestigious university.
The strong criticism from Huntsman, a 1987 graduate and former UPenn trustee, comes amid a growing backlash from donors and trustees. The Huntsman family has been such prominent supporters of UPenn that the Huntsman name is on the main Wharton School building.
The controversy began last month when a multiday event took place on campus at UPenn called the Palestine Writes Literature Festival. UPenn has acknowledged that event included speakers with a history of making antisemitic remarks, and UPenn leaders issued a statement ahead of the festival condemning antisemitism broadly, though not the festival specifically.
Powerful donors led by private equity billionaire Marc Rowan have argued UPenn leaders did not go far enough to condemn that event or speak out against antisemitism, particularly in the wake of Hamas’ attack on Israel last weekend.
UPenn President Liz Magill, attempting to put out the fire, issued a statement Sunday admitting the school did not handle the situation as well as it could have.
But Huntsman was unmoved.
“The University’s silence in the face of reprehensible and historic Hamas evil against the people of Israel (when the only response should be outright condemnation) is a new low,” Huntsman wrote to Magill in a letter obtained by CNN. “Silence is antisemitism, and antisemitism is hate, the very thing higher ed was built to obviate.”

I Don't Have Much Sympathy for a Guy Going 35 MPH Over the Limit
AGeorgia man was left reeling after receiving a $1.4-million speeding ticket, but city officials say the figure was just a placeholder, not the actual fine.
Connor Cato told WSAV-TV in Savannah that he received the citation after getting pulled over in September for driving 90 mph in a 55-mph zone.
He called the court thinking the figure was a typo but said he was told that he had either to pay it or appear in court in December.
Savannah officials say anyone caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 35 mph has to appear in court, where a judge will determine the actual fine.
The $1.4-million figure Cato received reflected a “placeholder” that was automatically generated by citation software used by the local Recorder's Court, said Joshua Peacock, a spokesman for Savannah's city government. The actual fine cannot exceed $1,000, plus state-mandated costs.
“We do not issue that placeholder as a threat to scare anybody into court, even if this person heard differently from somebody in our organization,” Peacock told the Associated Press.
He added that the court was “currently working on adjusting the placeholder language to avoid any confusion.”

I'm a Big Fan of Electric Vehicles, But This Gives Me Pause.
A Tesla owner said he was "flabbergasted" when he and his partner were hit with a hefty bill to fix their electric vehicle.
Johnny Bacigalupo and Rob Hussey told the Scottish news outlet Edinburgh Live they were billed £17,374, or about $21,000, to fix their Tesla after its battery was damaged by rain last week.
"I honestly can't believe that this has happened. When I first got the call, I thought we would get a bill for £500 or £1,000," Bacigalupo told Edinburgh Live. "When they said over 17 grand — it's absolutely obscene. My heart missed a beat, honestly."
J.D. Power quoted Elon Musk saying in 2019 that it could cost $5,000 to $10,000 to replace a Tesla battery but added that the figures were different in 2023. Recurrent, which reports on EV battery health, said battery replacement could cost anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000.
Bacigalupo and Hussey said that after being unable to start their vehicle and arranging to have it delivered to Tesla Edinburgh by a collection firm, they received a call Wednesday informing them that the battery was "damaged due to water ingress."
They said they were told the eight-year warranty didn't cover this and were asked whether they wanted to proceed with a repair costing about £17,500.
"Did I wish to proceed? I was flabbergasted and couldn't really find my words," Bacigalupo told Edinburgh Live, adding that he asked the Tesla representative how the couple was at fault.
The outlet said it verified the bill via correspondence between Tesla and the couple and had seen an email from Tesla customer relations saying it was investigating the complaint.
A similar incident occurred last year when a Canadian Tesla owner was told it would cost $26,000 to get a replacement battery for his vehicle, Fox Business reported.
The owner, Mario Zelaya, shared his experience in a TikTok video and said he was locked out of his Tesla Model S after the battery died. Zelaya said he eventually sold his Tesla after he spent $30 getting replacement ownership papers that were locked in the vehicle.
EV batteries can deteriorate at various rates depending on numerous factors, including how they were charged and the environment in which the vehicle was driven.

The Discovery on This Case Could Get Interesting. Steele Could Look Into Financial Ties Between Previous Guy and Russians.
A lawyer for Donald Trump told a London judge Monday that the ex-president plans to prove that a discredited report by a former British spy that contained “shocking and scandalous claims” that he was compromised by Russians in his first bid for the presidency was wrong and harmed his reputation.
Trump has sued the company founded by Christopher Steele, who created a dossier in 2016 that contained rumors and uncorroborated allegations about Trump that erupted in a political storm just before he was inaugurated.
Trump is seeking damages from Orbis Business Intelligence for allegedly violating British data protection laws. Steele's company is seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed during two days of hearings at London's High Court.
Trump is claiming he “suffered personal and reputational damage and distress" because his data protection rights were violated.
Steele, who once ran the Russia desk for the Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6, was paid by Democrats to compile research that included salacious allegations that Russians could potentially blackmail Trump for activity with prostitutes in a Moscow hotel. Trump said the dossier was fake news and a political witch hunt.
Tomlinson said it "contained shocking and scandalous claims about the personal conduct of President Trump” and included allegations he paid bribes to Russian officials to further his business interests. Trump's case “is that this personal data is egregiously inaccurate,” he said.
Tomlinson said Trump plans to vindicate himself in court by providing evidence that the report's claims were false.
Orbis wants the lawsuit thrown out because it said the report was never meant to be made public and was published by BuzzFeed without the permission of Steele or Orbis. It also said the claim was filed too late.
Orbis attorney Antony White said Trump has a “deep and intense animus against” Steele and the firm and a “a long history of repeatedly bringing frivolous, meritless and vexatious claims for the purpose of vexing and harassing perceived enemies and others against whom he bears a grudge.”
Trump had called for Steele to be “extradited, tried, and thrown into jail” and has called him a “lowlife” and “sleazebag” involved in the "Russian collusion hoax” who produced “a total phony con job” dossier, White said in a court filing.
In two previous High Court cases, a judge ruled Orbis and Steele were not legally liable for the consequences of the dossier's publication.

Does Israel Have a Strategy? What Is Their End Game?
What Does Destroying Gaza Solve?
Israel may now be poised to undertake a ground invasion of Gaza in ways that I fear would layer another humanitarian catastrophe onto the existing one — and instead of uprooting extremists would buttress the Hamas narrative of hatred and amplify the venom these boys expressed.
Israel’s demand that more than one million people leave their homes in northern Gaza, when they have nowhere to go, could constitute the war crime of forced removal, according to Jan Egeland, the much respected secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council. There are fears that Israel will treat all those who are unable to flee as combatants to be wiped out.
Israel has tactical superiority, but what’s the strategy? Who will govern the rubble afterward? And how will the mass slaughter of Palestinian civilians possibly lead to harmony with Israel afterward?
Yet it’s also true that Israel faces a serious conundrum when it has a neighbor led by terrorists and inhabited by teenage soccer players who applaud terrorism. Where does that anger come from, that openness to butcher even high school girls?

Is This the Going to Be a Great Cancer Treatment?Once we find bacteria that can colonize a tumor, we need to somehow instruct those bacteria to promote the death of the tumor. We’ve gotten a lot better over the past few decades at engineering bacteria to do sophisticated things. And we’ve also gotten a lot better at understanding how the immune system targets things for destruction, and what signals it responds to in order to do that. The culmination of all of this is starting to bear fruit. In the October 13 issue of Science, Dr. Tal Danino and crew at Columbia University describe how they engineered both a probiotic bacterium and human T cells to team up for tumor destruction. So what is it that we want bacteria to do once they colonize a tumor? The simple answer would be: Have them produce a poison! Right? But we don’t want something that is deadly to human cells leaking out of the tumor and doing harm to the rest of the body. We’d like to be a bit more sophisticated than that. A better strategy would be to get the bacteria to sound an alarm to the immune system letting it know to come and attack the tumor. Bacteria can selectively infiltrate solid tumors and clearly mark them as invaders

Junk Science Is Sending Women Who Lose Their Babies to PrisonA barbaric 'witch trial' lab test for stillborn babies is sending women to prison for murderIn investigations across the country, a lung float test has emerged as a barometer of sorts to help determine if a mother suffered the devastating loss of a stillbirth or if she murdered her baby who was born alive. The test has been used in at least 11 cases where women were charged criminally since 2013 and has helped put nine of them behind bars, a ProPublica review of court records and news reports found. Some of those women remain in prison. Some had their charges dropped and were released. But the test is so deeply flawed that many medical examiners say it cannot be trusted. They put it in the same company as the discredited analysis of bite marks and bloodstain patterns, 911 calls and hair comparisons, all of which lack solid scientific foundations and have contributed to wrongful convictions. It is pseudoscience masquerading as sound forensics, they say. Some even liken the test to witch trials, where courts decided if a woman was a witch based on whether she floated or sank.
