The Voter-Fraud Defense Just Got a Tiny Bit Stronger, Although This Frauduelent Voter Probably Voted for Previous Guy
An Alabama legislator was arrested Tuesday on felony voter fraud charges accusing him of voting in a district where he did not live.
Republican Rep. David Cole of Huntsville was arrested on charges of voting in an unauthorized location, according to Madison County Jail records.
The details of the charge were not immediately available in court records, but the arrest comes after accusations that Cole did not live in the district in which he was elected.
Cole, a doctor and Army veteran, was elected to the House of Representatives last year.
Voter fraud is a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
The Alabama attorney general’s office is prosecuting the case against Cole, a spokeswoman confirmed.
There's Your Evidence, Laura
Fox News host Laura Ingraham told John Eastman she had not seen evidence of fraud in the 2020 election after the former Donald Trump attorney claimed he had “lots” of it.
Eastman was one of 18 Trump allies indicted alongside the former president by the Fulton County District Attorney’s office in Georgia earlier this month. According to the indictment, Eastman and others tried to establish a slate of fake electors to falsely certify that Trump won the 2020 election in order to change the outcome.
In Tuesday’s Fox News interview, Eastman continued to double down on lies about the election, and insisted he “had lots of evidence of fraud.”
“I haven’t seen that evidence, and I’m always wanting to see everything,” Ingraham said. “I’d love to see that evidence.”

Over Time, this Overtime Rule Will Make a Big Difference
The Biden administration unveiled a new rule Wednesday to extend overtime pay to an additional 3.6 million salaried white-collar workers in the United States.
While most hourly workers are entitled to overtime pay, non-hourly professional workers — executive, managerial, administrative and professional employees — are exempt from overtime pay unless they make less than $35,568 a year.
The Labor Department’s proposed rule would guarantee overtime pay for far more non-hourly workers, raising the threshold for professional workers to benefit those earning less than $55,000 a year.
“Today, the Biden-Harris administration is proposing a rule that would help restore workers’ economic security by giving millions more salaried workers the right to overtime protections,” acting labor secretary Julie Su said in a statement.
The rule would boost wages for many workers in low-wage but salaried occupations — including in administration, hospitality, manufacturing and retail — making them eligible for time-and-a-half pay for working more than 40 hours in a week. In another major change, the rule would include automatic increases to the salary level for overtime eligibility every three years.

He Was Caught Holding the Bag
Robert Withington thought he hit the lottery when he found a bag of about $5,000 in cash in the parking lot of a Connecticut bank.
But police in Trumbull, Conn., say the 57-year-old man’s good fortune in May came in the form of thousands of dollars of the town’s tax money in a deposit bag marked with the bank’s insignia.
Months after what he thought was a lucky and lucrative morning, Withington has been charged with third-degree larceny. He turned himself in on Friday after a lengthy investigation, Trumbull police said in a news release.
Withington contends he did not see anything on the bag of cash indicating that it had an owner. He told the Trumbull Times that this was a case of “finders keepers.” “It’s not like this was planned out,” he told Hearst Connecticut Media. “Everything was in the moment and it was like I hit the lottery. That was it.”
He added, “This is like a crock of baloney.”
Trumbull Police Lt. Brian Weir told The Washington Post in a statement that the bag of cash “contained numerous documents that identified the owner of the contents as the Town of Trumbull,” and that Withington acknowledged he had taken the money on May 30.
“He kept the bag, believing that he had no obligation to return the bag to its rightful owner,” Weir said.
If convicted, Withington could face between 1 to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine, according to state attorneys. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday morning. It’s not known whether he has an attorney.

DeathSentence Hates Free Money
President Joe Biden is offering one of his White House challengers hundreds of millions of dollars to spend in his state. The only problem: that opponent is refusing to take it.
The Inflation Reduction Act makes Florida eligible for some $350 million in energy efficiency incentives. But Gov. Ron DeSantis has rejected the funding and other measures, creating the most prominent blockade by any Republican governor against Biden’s economic agenda.
And there’s nothing the White House can do besides hope he changes his mind.
The rejection has the potential to create significant ripple effects, politically and economically, in the coming months. As the president and his Cabinet members go around the country boasting about the IRA, rebates for energy-efficient purchases — the majority of the funding that DeSantis has refused — have played a particularly prominent role. That’s not just because they underpin the administration’s climate agenda but because they provide direct rebates to consumers.
The IRA allows governors the authority to block a handful of its programs, and with it, the power to blunt the political impact of legislation that some Democrats believe will be a key factor in the 2024 election.
Through a veto of his legislature’s request, DeSantis turned down $5 million to set up the rebate program for consumers who buy energy efficient appliances and retrofit their homes. It also effectively blocked $341 million to fund the program because the state would need the administrative money to apply for the program, according to people familiar with Florida's budget process. However, federal Energy Department rules allow a state to accept the second pot of money even if they don’t take the first. If Florida doesn’t apply for the full $346 million by next August, the law allows DOE to provide Florida’s money to other states.
The governor also rejected $3 million in IRA funds to help the state fight pollution and rebuffed the Solar for All program which would have paid to help low-income people access solar panels. DeSantis also vetoed $24 million in grants from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
So far, DeSantis is the only governor to signal that he will block the energy rebates. But on the smaller sums of money, he has company. He’s one of four to turn down pollution mitigation funding from the IRA. The others are the Republican governors of South Dakota and Iowa, and Kentucky’s governor, who is a Democrat. The states that haven’t applied for the solar fund are all led by Republicans. They include Florida, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota and South Dakota.

You Can Be Too Thin, If You are Too Young
Weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are surging in popularity, but that doesn't mean they're good for everyone.
Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) may be dangerous for children, warned researchers at University of California, Irvine.
Treating childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes with these injected medications may have unintended and adverse consequences in pediatric patients, the team of clinicians, exercise scientists, pharmaceutical scholars, ethicists and behavioral experts said in their commentary.
While the new class of medication could benefit children with morbid obesity and Type 2 diabetes -- a problem worsened by COVID pandemic-related shutdowns -- the authors suspect overuse and abuse among youth is inevitable.
