Did you hear about these new reversible jackets? I'm excited to see how they turn out.
It's An Unpopular Abortion Proposal. It's an Unpopular Government Shutdown. It's Two, Two, Two Ways To Commit Political Suicide In One
A government shutdown might actually—some would say “probably”—happen this fall. And abortion is at the center of the risk.
But it’s not Democrats who are wielding power to hold up critical spending bills. At least not in the House.
Moderate House Republicans, many from battleground districts, are squabbling with members of their own party on whether to advance a controversial provision that would overturn federal guidance allowing mifepristone, a pill that can induce an abortion in the first two months of pregnancy, to be sent by mail.
At the crux of the holdup is the political risk for moderates in taking votes on abortion-related issues.
Public opinion is against Republicans on reproductive rights. The Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade last year was a driving force for GOP underperformance in the midterms. And virtually every proposal made by House Republicans on restricting abortion access has become fodder for Democratic hopes of winning back the majority in 2024.

This is Despicable, Even By Previous Guy Standards
Despite signing an agreement acknowledging he understands he may not "intimidate or attempt to intimidate a witness, victim, juror, informant, or officer of the court,” on Tuesday Donald Trump attacked Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis, who is expected to announce this month what would be the fourth criminal indictment against the ex-president.
Speaking to supporters from a New Hampshire high school, Trump attacked Willis as "racist," and baselessly claimed she had an affair with a gang member.
Trump declared, "they say there's a young woman, a young racist in Atlanta, a racist. And they say, I guess they say, that she was after a certain gang, and she ended up having an affair with the head of the gang or a gang member."
"And this is a person that wants to indict me," Trump continued telling the audience. "She's got a lot of problems, but she wants to indict me to try and run for some other office. What's going on in this country is – and by the way, once you indict me for a perfect phone call, this was even better than my perfect call with Ukraine."

No QOP, This Was Not Another Rigged Election
A temporary malfunction at a single Ohio polling location triggered a round of right-wing conspiracy theories from the usual suspects Tuesday.
WEWS-TV reporter Mike Holden tweeted Tuesday morning that all ballot scanners were not functioning properly at a polling location in Cuyahoga Falls, to the frustration of both voters and workers, and voters were offered the choice of leaving their ballots in a special bag to be scanned later or have their ballots voided so they could return when the machines were fixed.
However, according to an analysis by American Enterprise Institute senior fellow Kevin R. Kosar, the report left out some important contextual details that allowed the temporary outage to inflate into a conspiracy theory that blared across right-wing social media accounts and conservative media.
"What was lacking were any contextual facts, like this was: -- 1 polling location (out of 34) in 1 city; -- in 1 county of 88 counties. -- That maybe 20 voters here had seen their ballots delayed," Kosar tweeted. "That the town isn't a MAGA town. That the county's elections are overseen by a Republican. That Ohio's elections are directed by a Republican who campaigned for Issue 1, which would amend the state Constitution a& make it tougher for an abortion referendum to pass this autumn."

Deflation Nation
China's economy has slipped into deflation as consumer prices declined in July for the first time in more than two years.
The official consumer price index, a measure of inflation, fell by 0.3% last month from a year earlier.
Analysts said this increases pressure on the government to revive demand in the world's second largest economy.
This follows weak import and export data, which raised questions about the pace of China's post-pandemic recovery.
The country is also tackling ballooning local government debt and challenges in the housing market. Youth unemployment, which is at a record high, is also being closely watched as a record 11.58 million university graduates are expected to enter the Chinese job market this year.
Falling prices make it harder for China to lower its debt - and all the challenges which stem from that, such as a slower rate of growth, analysts said.

Adam Neumann Walked Away with $1.7 Billion
Four years ago, WeWork was preparing for a blockbuster IPO. Now the company is warning of possible bankruptcy.
“Our losses and negative cash flows from operating activities raise substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern,” WeWork said in a filing with the SEC on Tuesday.
The spectacular collapse of a company once valued by SoftBank at $40 billion has been years in the making, but is still surprising given the number of large commercial buildings around the world that don the company’s name. The combination of the Covid pandemic, which led many businesses to exit their leases in favor of remote work, and the subsequent economic slump, has left WeWork heavy on debt and struggling to generate cash.
“If we are not successful in improving our liquidity position and the profitability of our operations, we may need to consider all strategic alternatives, including restructuring or refinancing our debt, seeking additional debt or equity capital, reducing or delaying our business activities and strategic initiatives, or selling assets, other strategic transactions and/or other measures, including obtaining relief under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code,” the company said.
WeWork’s stock has been trading below $1 since mid-March. It tumbled 26% to 15 cents in extended trading on Tuesday and now has a market cap below $500 million.
The company had a net loss in the first half of the year of $700 million after losing $2.3 billion in 2022. As of June 30, it had $205 million in cash and equivalents and total liquidity of $680 million. It has $2.91 billion in long-term debt.
WeWork first sought to go public in 2019, publishing its initial prospectus in August of that year. With its full financials available for everyone to see, the business was roundly criticized due to excessive spending and risks along with founder Adam Neumann’s complex relationship at the company.
The IPO never made it out the door. SoftBank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son called his investment in WeWork “foolish” and his company took majority control of the business in a $5 billion financing package. Neumann was forced to step down.

The QOP Keeps Doubling Down on Banning Abortions. And They Keep Losing.
Voters in Ohio successfully thwarted a Republican attempt to make it harder to pass a November pro-choice ballot measure.
On Tuesday, Ohioans voted to defeat Issue 1, a ballot initiative to raise the threshold for altering the state constitution from a simple statewide majority vote to 60%. Although a simple majority has been the standard in Ohio for over 100 years, anti-choice Republicans in the state called for a special election to raise the vote threshold in a preemptive attempt to block the abortion-rights constitutional amendment that will be in front of voters in November’s general election.
“Ohioans’ support for abortion access and reproductive freedom was never in question,” NARAL Pro-Choice America said in a statement issued Tuesday evening. “From defeating Issue 1 tonight to submitting nearly twice the amount of signatures needed to get a measure protecting abortion access on the ballot in November, Ohio voters have made clear that they will settle for nothing less than reproductive freedom for all. Republicans should be ashamed of their efforts to subvert the will of voters.”
Despite many Republican claims that the special election was about protecting Ohio from out-of-state special interests, it was ultimately a proxy fight over abortion rights.
Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, an outspoken anti-choice leader, was one of several Republicans who attempted to hide the real intent of Issue 1. He told the Washington Examiner last month that Issue 1 has “never been exclusively about abortion.” But as feminist writer Jessica Valenti pointed out, LaRose said earlier in the summer that Issue 1 “is 100% about keeping a radical pro-abortion amendment out of our constitution.”
Expect Ballot Measures on Abortion, Redistricting, and Pot in November. Goodby Columbus.
“One thing that hurt us in the election was the length of time of the campaign,” state Senate President Matt Huffman said. “Until May 10, we didn’t know there was a campaign,” he complained. “So it took us a long time to put the campaign together to execute the campaign.”
It’s worth noting here that, by definition, the people who initiated the question—his people—had longer to plan and execute the campaign than the other side.

DeathSentence Removes An Elected Offidial From Office.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) suspended the Orlando-area state attorney Wednesday, saying she was “clearly and fundamentally derelict” in her duty.
DeSantis removed Monique Worrell, a Democrat, from her job as the chief prosecutor for Florida’s Ninth Judicial Circuit Court at a brief news conference in Tallahassee. It’s the second time in a year that the governor, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, suspended an elected Democrat from office.

If Memories Are All I Sing, I'd Rather Drive a Truck ... For $170,000 Per Year
Shipping giant UPS has warned its profits will be lower than planned this year, in part reflecting the pay increases it agreed to grant US workers in a labour deal last month.
UPS said the average full-time driver would earn about $170,000 (£135,000) annually, including healthcare and other benefits, by the end of the five-year contract.
That is up from about $145,000 now.
The raises follow the most serious bout of inflation in the US in 40 years.
Overall prices rose 3% over the 12 months to June, after leaping more than 9% in the prior year.
As rising living costs strain household budgets, labour tensions have boiled over, leading to unionisation campaigns at Starbucks and other companies, and strikes across the country.
The threat of a strike by the Teamsters union hit UPS in recent weeks, as customers diverted about one million packages per day to rival companies, costing the company about $200m in sales.
UPS said the deal reached with the Teamsters - expected to be approved by workers in a vote this month - would also weigh on its profits.
In October 1957, Ricky officially released his first album, aptly named Ricky. The following months were unbelievable. It reached #1 on the charts before the end of the year, but that wasn't even the best part. For a brief shining moment, Ricky even surpassed his idol Elvis. Between 1958 and 1959, Ricky had 12 hits on the charts; Elvis only had 11.

Just Do the Two-Step 2,000 Times
There's growing evidence that getting your steps in really does count, but you may not need to hit 10,000 steps a day to gain health benefits, according to a new study.
The number of steps a person needs to walk in a day in order to decrease the risk of heart disease is lower than previously thought, researchers found.
The new study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, is the largest ever to measure the positive impact of daily walking and step-counting and includes data from about 230,000 individuals from around the world.
Researchers found that walking about 4,000 steps per day is a good target because people who hit the 4,000 step-mark saw their risk of dying from any cause go down.
"The number of steps over which we might observe significant benefits seems to be lower than we previously thought," said Maciej Banach, one of the authors of the study and professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
But health benefits do increase the more people walk, Banach said.

That Finnish Sense of Humor. What a Funny Joke.
A Finnish man reportedly stored 12 kilograms (26.5 pounds) of dynamite in two cars belonging to a friend, saying it “was a joke”, Finland broadcaster YLE said Wednesday.
The owner of the two cars didn’t see it as funny and informed the police who briefly detained the potential prankster. He was eventually freed but remains a suspect. He admitted to placing the explosives on Aug. 3 in the cars but said he didn’t intend to blow them up, YLE reported.
Police have also ruled out any possible terrorist intent. The suspect faces up to two years in prison. ------------------- These Are Dymnamite Jokes, Not Putting Some in a Car.

The New Celebrity Fad: Mic Tossing for Charity
The microphone that Cardi B hurled at an unruly fan last month in Las Vegas is now worth a whole lot more than it used to be, selling for nearly $100,000 Tuesday in an eBay auction.
The mic was initially put on sale by Scott Fisher, the owner of The Wave Inc, a Las Vegas-based audio production company that provided sound equipment to Drai's Beachclub on the day of the incident, according to Fisher.
He told CBS News that his company, which gives audio support to many nightclubs, has been providing audio gear to Drai's since their grand opening at the Cromwell Hotel over nine years ago.
On July 29, in an incident captured on cell phone video, a fan threw a liquid at Cardi B as she was performing on stage at the Las Vegas beach club. In retaliation, the rapper threw her mic at the audience member. The fan made a police complaint about the incident, but Cardi B was not charged.
Fisher eventually retrieved the mic and put it up for auction, committing the proceeds to two charities: Friendship Circle Las Vegas and the Wounded Warrior Project.
