To the mathematicians who thought of the idea of zero, thanks for nothing!
This is VERY Sad News to Me. RIP, Dolly.
Doyle Brunson, the cowboy hat enthusiast known to poker fans as the "Godfather of Poker", has died aged 89.
The Texas native passed away Sunday in Las Vegas, the city where he won 10 World Series of Poker tournaments and two world championships.
In a statement shared by his agent Brian Balsbaugh, Mr Brunson's family called him "a beloved Christian man, husband, father and grandfather".
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988, he became an ambassador for poker.
Mr Brunson took up professional poker after a knee injury ended his college basketball career in his home state.
After relocating to Las Vegas, he quickly became a mainstay of the city's high-stakes poker scene.
He was the first American to win $1m (£800,000) in poker tournaments and accumulated more than $6m (£4.8m) in live tournament earnings.
Mr Brunson was a staple of the increasingly popular World Series of Poker. The 10 WSOP tournament-winning bracelets he earned are the second highest of all-time, only behind Phil Hellmuth's 16.
But the crowning glory of his career came when he won the WSOP's main event in consecutive years, in 1976 and 1977.
His starting hand in those back-to-back events was 10-2, now memorialised by poker players as the "Doyle Brunson" and also as the "Texas Dolly", his other nickname.
So formidable an opponent was the grinning Texan that, according to ESPN, his elimination from the main event each year would be announced to the other players.
In 2018, at his last WSOP game, Mr Brunson made the final table before being defeated and received a standing ovation as he left the room.
The Hall of Famer has continued to influence the poker world through his books Super System and Super System 2.
The former, written in 1979, is considered one of the first books to teach poker strategy and has had a lasting impact on the game.
His career spanned a period in which the once frowned-upon card game has burst to prominence, from the casino floor to the internet.
"Legend. There will never be another Doyle Brunson," fellow Hall of Famer Daniel Negreanu wrote on Twitter.
Five-time WSOP champion Scotty Nguyen said "can't believe this day has come - you will always be held high in our hearts, the man, the myth, the legend & THE GODFATHER of poker baby!"
Mr Brunson is survived by his wife Louise; his son Todd, also a championship-winning poker player; and his daughter Pam.
There Should be a Special Empty Chair at this Year's WSOP Main Event

How do You Say "Assholes" in German?
Travellers on an intercity train in Austria were startled on Sunday when a recording of an Adolf Hitler speech was played on board.
Instead of the normal announcements, a crowd could also be heard shouting "Heil Hitler" and "Sieg Heil" over the train's speaker system.
The operator said there had been several such incidents in recent days.
One passenger on the Bregenz-Vienna service told the BBC that everyone on the train was "completely shocked".
David Stoegmueller, a Green Party MP, said the speech by the Nazi German leader was played over the intercom shortly before the train, an ÖBB Railjet 661, arrived in Vienna.
"We heard two episodes," he said. "First there was 30 seconds of a Hitler speech, and then I heard 'Sieg Heil'."
Mr Stoegmueller said the train staff were unable to stop the recording and were unable to make their own announcements. "One crew member was really upset," he added.
In a statement sent to the BBC, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) said: "We clearly distance ourselves from the content.
"We can currently assume that the announcements were made by people directly on the train via intercoms. We have reported the matter to the police," the ÖBB said.
It is understood that complaints have been filed against two people.
Mr Stoegmueller said he had received an email from a man who was on the train with an old lady who was a concentration camp survivor. "She was crying," he said.

He's Probably Hiding With Previous Guy's Shocking Evidence About Obama's Birth Certificate and Sadam's WMDs.House Oversight and Reform Committee Chair James Comer had a “dog ate my homework” excuse for not coming up with the goods following what was supposed to have been his “judgment day” for President Joe Biden’s international crime family. He lost his informant. The Kentucky Republican showed up on Fox News this weekend and told Maria Bartiromo his sad tale. “Well, unfortunately, we can’t track down the informant,” the Kentucky representative told Bartiromo. “We’re hopeful that the informant is still there. The whistleblower knows the informant. The whistleblower is very credible.” And the informant is one of those tricky international spies who has used spycraft to go dark. “Well, we’re hopeful that we can find the informant,” Comer said. “Remember, these informants are kind of in the spy business, so they don’t make a habit of being seen a lot or being high-profile or anything like that.” Will They Put His Picture on Milk Cartons?

With a Friend Like This, Who Needs Enemies?
Yevgeniy Prigozhin said he would tell Ukraine’s military where to attack Russian troops if they pulled their own forces back from the beleaguered city of Bakhmut, where Wagner mercenaries were taking heavy losses
In an interview with The Washington Post this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would not confirm the contacts with Prigozhin. “This is a matter of [military] intelligence,” he said. The Ukrainian leader also objected to airing classified information publicly and said he believed that the leaks had benefited Russia.
But there is no debating Prigozhin’s bitter frustration with the grinding fight in Bakhmut. He has complained, publicly and privately, that the Russian Defense Ministry has not given his fighters the ammunition and other resources they need to succeed. Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine, has seen some of the bloodiest fighting of the war. Over the past few months, in a grinding back and forth measured by city blocks, Ukrainian and Russian forces have taken steep casualties.

With a House Like This, Who Needs Enemies?
The Russians and Chinese are loving—just loving—Congress’s latest debt budgetary hostage crisis. But how much can they really leverage it in their long economic war to replace the dollar as the world’s denominator?
Last week, when Avril Haines, the Director of National Intelligence, testified in front of Congress, she had something to say about the body’s toying with the debt ceiling. Their little game of chicken, she said, was playing right into the hands of America’s main adversaries, Russia and China. “It would be almost a certainty that they would look to take advantage of the opportunity,” she said, to play up “the chaos within the United States, that we’re not capable of functioning as a democracy.” A debt default, she added, would unquestionably “create global uncertainty about the value of the U.S. dollar and U.S. institutions and leadership, leading to volatility in currency and financial markets and commodity markets that are priced in dollars.”
In fact, both Moscow and Beijing have already been hard at work spinning the debt ceiling standoff into domestic propaganda. Kremlin-owned television has been reveling in every single U.S. bank failure. “The U.S. banking system is shaking like it has a bad fever,” one anchor crowed upon delivering the news of First Republic’s demise. Other reports are predicting that an American default could happen any day now, which would finally usher in the kind of world Vladimir Putin has been pushing for for years: one not denominated in the U.S. dollar.

Welcome to Hell.
Welcome to the State of DeathSentence
A Florida teacher is under investigation by the state Department of Education after what she believes is a targeted attack by a school board member who took issue with a Disney movie shown in her classroom.
At a Hernando County School Board meeting Tuesday, fifth-grade teacher Jenna Barbee alleged school board member Shannon Rodriguez reported her to the Florida Department of Education for showing her students Disney's 2022 movie "Strange World." It's the first Disney movie with an openly gay character.
Barbee, a teacher at Winding Waters K-8, said during public comment the Disney movie tied into her students' Earth science lesson and did not have sexually inappropriate content.

Turkish Democracy Hangs by a Thread
Turkey’s presidential election will be decided in a runoff, election officials said Monday, after incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan pulled ahead of his chief challenger, but fell short of an outright victory that would extend his increasingly authoritarian rule into a third decade.
The May 28 second-round vote will determine whether the strategically located NATO country remains under the president’s firm grip or can embark on a more democratic course promised by his main rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
While Erdogan has governed for 20 years, opinion polls had suggested that run could be coming to an end and that a cost-of-living crisis and criticism over the government’s response to a devastating February earthquake might redraw the electoral map.
Instead, Erdogan’s retreat was still less marked than predicted — and with his alliance retaining its hold on the parliament, he is now in a good position to win in the second round.

Thanks for adding this. We can hope that sound minds will prevail and those "Rebs" will go back into the holes they crawled out of. If they bring this country down, it will fall on their heads too.

I agree. There are some wackos in the QOP who would be happy to see us default. They are just doing it to piss off the liberals, or they see the government as evil and want to bring the whole thing crashing down. Either way, they are crazy. I don't think the negotiations lead anywhere, because McCarthy is afraid it will cost him the Speakership. He'd rather wreak havok on the economy than lose the gavel. I see two ways out of this: 1) A few moderate Republicans join with the Democrats to pass a debt ceiling increase. 2) Biden deicdes to use some sort of legal challenge to ignore the debt ceiling. This country is in uncharted waters. People who say, "We always get close to default, but then there is a last-minute compromise" don't see how different things are now. The QOP is no longer the Republican Party of the past.
