CHANGES
Frankie Collins withdraws from the draft. Frankie won't got to Hollywood.
John Olmsted is in the portal
Devan Cambridge switched his destination from Oregon to Texas Tech, joining Warren Washington.
Oct 17: Jose Perez transfers in from West Virginia
========================================
Next are the 5th-6th place Arizona State Sun Devils. Last season, they were once again, a good defensive team at #35 in KenPom, but only #101 in offense.
The had good wins including beating Arizona in Tucson and beating Creighton. They lost to a bad Washington team and an ABSOLUTLEY TERRIBLE Tesas Southern team, and there is the 37-point embarassment to San Francisco.
There is still some pressure on Bobby Hurley to produce. Here is his ASU resume.
Bobby Hurley's tenure has been marked with pretty good talent and terrible team chemistry. Last season the chemisty was a lottle better and they won their first NCAA tournament game. In the battle of legendary college guards turned coaches, the Sun Devils beat Steve Alford's Nevada Wolfpack. However, the chemistry can't be that good if seven players are transferring out.
Is his job in danger? Last season they actually finally fired Herm Edwards. But one NCAA win in 8 seasons may be enough in Tempe.
GRADUATING
Desmond led the team in scoring and steals.
IN THE DRAFT OR TURNING PRO
Neither Bagley not Collins was invited to the combine. or Chicago. I suspect Collins returns, but who knows?
Frankie led the Devils in assists and was their 3rd leading rebounder as a PG. They REALLY need him back.
TRANSFERRING OUT
Last season 5 players took the portal out of Tempe. This year the bus out of town is very more crowded with EIGHT seats occupied.
With the departures of Brennan and Nunez, all of last year's freshman class is gone.
Add them all up and ASU is losing 79% of last season's starts.
Here's what else they lose.
Points: Top 4
Rebounds: 5 of Top 6
Assists: 4 of top 5, although assist leader Frankie Collins returns.
Steals: 3 of top 4
Bobby Hurley has generally had a hard time finding a quality center. He finally got on in Warren Washington, but he couldn't keep him. Say goodbye to your ream leader in rebounds, FG%, and blocks.
Austin Nunez and DJ Horne were the two best 3-point shooters in the rotation.
Actually the best three-point shooter on the team was Bobby Hurley Jr. Maybe Bobby Sr. talked to Steve Alford at their NCAA game about playing his son.
Here are the numbers of players leaving Tempe by way of the portal under Bobby Hurley (this may include some walkons).
A stunning TWENTY-FIVE players have transferred out in the past three seasons. TWENTY-FIVE!!
Who would want to come to a program like that? How much NIL money do they have? Maybe they think they are going to play for Dan Hurley.
RETURNING
That's all, folks! The Sun Devils return somewhere between 3 rotation players.
Jamiya Neal was a decent backup guard, who scored in double figures 5 times, but overall wasn't a great shooter.
Gaggney was a much worse shooter who scored in double figures twice.
This roster is barer than Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard.
(#58 class, #6 in Pac-12)
You might expect a huge recruiting haul with all that playing time available. You might be wrong.
Will the incoming freshman class help after the mass exodous? All Hurley could manage are a couple of 3-star guys.
You have to wonder how Green got an Alabama offer, with the rest of his suitors. Maybe it wasn't a real one.
(#43 transfer class, #3 in Pac-12)
Last season Bobby Hurley did very well in the tranfer portal, briniging in four starters with the Cambridge brothers, Frankie Collins, and Warren Washington. With all the departures, he neeeds a big haul of talent this off-season. He got the big haul. Did he get the talent?
Kamari Lands lands in Tempe. He was a bad shooter for the worst team from a power conference. Even if ASU is terrible, this will be a step up from Louisville. They should win more than 4 games.
Brycen Long was a very good outside shooter for Houston Christian, the 11th worst team in D1 according to KenPom.
Hurley adds two players from LSU, the last-place team in the SEC, and one from Tulsa, the last place team in the AAC. Notice a theme here?
The only decent team Hurley recruited from is San Francisco, who finished 5th in the WCC (with a losing conference record). Their best win of the season? A 37-point drubbing of the Arizona State Sun Devils.
I guess Zane Meeks thinks that "if you can beat 'em, join 'em." Meeks scored 9 points off the bench against his future team.
Adam Miller is on his third school in 3 season, visiting Illinoi, LSU and now ASU. He hasn't shot well and his A/TO ratio last season was 0.8.
Jose Perez is on his 5th school in 6 years. He transferred from Manhattan to West Virginia, but didn't play there last season and is moving on.
This isn't really a very impressive group of transfers.
CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION
Arizona State had a decent season with a roster including a 5-star and four 4-star players last season. This season will feature a much less talented roster, and very little continuity. Most of his roster will be transfers from losing programs. Can Bobby Hurley turn losers into winners? Can you make guacamole out of lemons?
This may be an ugly season in Tempe. Another season of wondering if they hired the wrong Hurley.

7. Arizona State
Name tags once again will be necessary for the Sun Devils, who lost four of the top-five scorers from last season’s 23-win team but will have clarity at the head of the bench: Coach Bobby Hurley received a (well-deserved) two-year contract extension this spring. As of now, the roster features eight newcomers, six of them transfers. We expect at least two, Adam Miller (LSU) and Kamari Lands (Louisville), to play key roles next season. Guard Frankie Collins withdrew from the draft, which should help with continuity. Previous: 7
Vrooman: 6
Arizona State once again got a facelift via the transfer portal as 6 of their projected 9 top minute getters are new imports. The Sun Devils have finished with an aEM between about +8.0 and +15.0 for all but one year in the past decade. This projection has them slightly above that at +16.2 which means it’s probably a little high unless Hurley has his best season ever. Not impossible but not likely.
