CH-CH-CH-CH-CH-CHANGES
No changes since the first preview.
---------------------------
Next are the l11th-place Oregon State Beavers. They followed up their surprise run at the end of the 2021 season with two terrible seasons. In 2021 they went 3-26 and 1-19 in the Pac-12. In 2022 they improved to 11-21 and 5-15 in the Pac-12.
After the 2021 Elite Eight run, Coach Wayne Tinkle received a four-year contract extension that takes him through the 2026-27 season. I wonder how the AD is feeling about that. Wanna get away?
One factor may have contributed to their success in 2020-21. All five of Oregon State's leading scorers played in every game. In a year when there was roster chaos everywhere, no Beaver missed a game due to injury or COVID.
Of course, last season, their six leading scorers played in every game, and they still finished 11th in the league.
If there is any reason for optimism in Corvallis, it is tha they were very young last season. They were a bad team, but a young, bad team. I suppose that is better than being an old, bad team.
GRADUATING
Dzmitry Ryuny was only at Oregon State for one season, which is not long enough to learn how to pronouce his name.
Since Rodrigue is leaving, this will be the last time I can do this schtick:

IN THE DRAFT
The last Beaver drafted was Jared Cunningham in 2012. Before that you have to go back to Corey Benjamin in 1998.
The last two OSU players to do something in the NBA were Gary Payton (1990) and --- You may be able to guess. The answer is at the end.
TRANSFERRING OUT
Taylor is a big loss. He was theiir second-leading scorer and one of the few upper-classmen in their main rotation.
Krass was way down in the roatation. He is going to Southern Miss. I think he will try to date a southern miss, as well.
RETURNING
The Beaver return nine rotation players from a bad team. Is that a good or bad thing? 6 of the 9 players were freshmen. It is said that the best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores. However, do they become good sophomores? Oregon State basketball fans had better hope they do. (There are Oregon State basketball fans, aren't there?)
The Beav were not the worst offensive team in the Pac-12, since Cal was also in the Pac-12, but they were terrible. They shot 46% from inside the arc (#333 in the country) and 32% from outside the arc (#294). They were so bad that a guy who shot 17% from the field actually started a game. Dexter Akanno shot 36% /25% and played 26 minutes per game.
In addition, they were a terrible ball handling team. Their team A/TO ratio was #340 in the nation out of 352 teams. They were #270 in turnovers.
They were a bit better on defense, with KenPom ranking them as the #134 defense. That was only the 10th worst defense in the Pac-12. Stanford and Cal were worse.
Some of theise players showed flashes of talent as freshmen. Jordan Pope was on the conference all-freshman team. (Adem Bona is the only other member of the all-freshman team to return to the Pac-12 for next season. It's difficult to have a good conference if your best young talent is leaving. )
Pope led them in scoring and assists, but he didn't shoot a great percentage or have a great A/TO ratio. If any OSU player MIGHT get some PT on UCLA, it could be Pope,
At times, Bilodeau and Rataj looked like decent players.
Beyond that, I am not sure how many of these guys are Pac-12 level players, even if the level of the Pac-12 isn't very good.
By any standards, this is a terrible recruiting class. 247 gives this class ZERO points. It was the worst recruiting class of any team in a Power 5 conference.
When you beat Lehigh and Cal Poly for a recruit, you have to wonder if they kid is a Pac-12 level player.
Wayne Tinkle managed to win 5 conference games last season with this motley group of young players. I suppose that's a pretty good for that roster. However, he's going to need to figure out a way to get more talent on his team.
Does he have any more talented sons? How about assistant Stephen Thompson? Does he have more kids? Any of the other assitant coaches?
Oregon State will be the only Pac-12 team with no 4-star or 5-star players on their roster next year. Only 1 player was in the top 200 of his class, and he was #180. If you are looking for an untalented team, leave it to the Beavers.
Of course, Corvallis is a difficult place for recruiting. But is it really worse than Pullman? Kyle Smith seems to get talent.
Oregon State will have to live or die with their returning players, since they have the worst recruiting class in the Pac-12 and no incoming transfers.
Basically OSU will play this season with the same roster as last season, minus Glenn Taylor, one of their two best players.
The only decent team they beat all year was the Trojans, and that was when the Trojans had an off night shooting. SC went 1 for 14 on threes, and wasn't much better inside the arc.
So OSU will to improve on that record with almost the same roster. Since they will all be a year older, they should be a bit better. I suspect it won't be a lot better. I think they will struggle to get to 5 conderence wins.
Wilner:
12. Oregon State
Not much has changed for the Beavers since the Hotline’s original projections. That’s good, because talented guard Jordan Pope remains on the roster, and bad, because needed upgrades have not emerged from the transfer portal. Although OSU was young last season, most of the losses came in blowout fashion — it’s not like the Beavers were a handful of baskets away from being .500. We can’t envision the returnees improving enough for the program to escape its downward trajectory. The spring of 2021 feels so long ago. Previous: 12

The other "recent" Beaver NBA star was AC Green in 1985. Other notable alums: Lester Connor, Steve Johnson, Lonny Shelton, and Mel Counts (1964).
This is NOT Mel Counts.

You might expect Coach Tinkle to find some scoring in the transfer portal. You would be disappointed. I imagine the Beaver fans are too. (If there are any Beaver fans.)
Oregon State is one of two teams with no incoming transfers. The other is Michigan State.
