The CEO of IKEA was elected Prime Minister in Sweden. He should have his cabinet together by the end of the weekend.
A Worthy Experiment
Canada's province of British Columbia is starting a first-in-the-nation trial decriminalising small amounts of hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin.
From Tuesday, adults can possess up to 2.5g of such drugs, as well as methamphetamine, fentanyl and morphine.
Canada's federal government granted the request by the west coast province to try out the three-year experiment.
It follows a similar policy in the nearby US state of Oregon, which decriminalised hard drugs in 2020.
Ahead of the pilot's launch, British Columbia and federal officials outlined the rules under the federally approved exemption from the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
While those substances will remain illegal, adults found in possession of a combined total of less than 2.5g of the drugs will not be arrested, charged or have their substances seized. Instead, they will be offered information on available health and social services.

100 Dead in Pakistan
The death toll from a suicide bombing at a mosque in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar has risen to 100, a medical official says, as the South Asian country faces a mounting security challenge from armed groups.
“So far, 100 bodies have been brought to Lady Reading Hospital,” the spokesman for the largest medical facility in the city, Mohammad Asim, said in a statement on Tuesday.
The vast majority of those killed in Monday’s bombing were police officers, he said.
Kashif Aftab Abbasi, senior superintendent of police operations in Peshawar, told Al Jazeera that more than 225 people were injured in the blast.

Back in Bakhmut
Over the last four days, Russia’s progress around the city of Bakhmut can be summed up this way: There isn’t any. Claims that they had surged past the town of Klishchiivka and were about to overrun Ivaniske on the south appear to have fizzled out along the line of a drainage canal that has proved to be an effective obstacle. The previous push on the north that saw Wagner Group forces move into Soledar appears to have not advanced in the last two weeks, and very well may have lost ground in the area east of Krasna Hora.
This isn’t to say that Russia did not gain ground over the last month in the Bahkmut area. That little town of Bakhmutske northeast of the city, now some 4km behind the line, was on the line back in November. However, the impetus that seemed to be carrying Russian forces to incremental advances on both side of Bakhmut appears to have stalled out, returning to the days of small forces being sent forward to their annihilation, followed by more of the same.
Already, there are hints that Russia is about to face another round of mobilization, so they can scrape together another mass of “mobliks” to grind down Ukrainian defenders at Bakhmut and other locations along the line.

"IPeople Literally Eating Each Other's Faces"
This past week, Fox News was once again running a series on how American cities had been utterly destroyed by the violent hordes of antifa. This time, it was Atlanta that was burned to the ground in a “night of rage.” And no, they weren’t talking about Sherman. But it’s just one of many cities that have been converted into a “Mad Max Hellscape.”
In a Clear Conspiracy, None of the Other News Media Are Reporting This. Neither Are Any of My Family and Friends in These Cities.

Totalitarian States Love To Have Peope Turn In Their Neighbors
As reported by the Iowa Starting Line, House Education Committee Chair Sykler Wheeler has introduced House Bill 112, which seeks to create a system for parents or students to report suspected violations of the anti-CRT law the state already has on the books.
If this sounds like a means to get public school teachers who remotely touch on race or systems of oppression fired or scared into silence, I’d say you’re exactly right.
Here’s how this would work. HB 112 would allow folks to report any suspected violation of a public school teacher covering topics including racism, diversity, inclusion, and sexism. Specifically, people would be able to log onto the Iowa Department of Education’s website and report a suspected violation. The Department of Education would evaluate the complaint. If they found it valid, they’d reach out to the local school board. From there, the school board would have two weeks to respond to the violation.
If the school board doesn’t correct the violation, the school district could face a civil penalty of up to $5,000 with a minimum of $500. All suspected violation reports would be made available to the Iowa Legislature in a yearly report.

The Mistake by the LakeFormer Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake was referred to the Arizona attorney general for investigation on Monday afternoon. According to the referral, which came from Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, Lake violated state law by tweeting out copies of voter signatures in her tweets. For the past several months, Lake has claimed that there was a conspiracy afoot and that she won the 2022 election, just as Donald Trump won the 2020 election. Lake's tweet that is being targeted by the secretary claims that the GOP-led Senate confirmed that 40,000 ballots were illegal, showing examples of voters' signatures, which is against the law. "Nothing in this section shall preclude public inspection of voter registration records at the office of the county recorder for the purpose prescribed by this section, except that ... the records containing a voter's signature ... shall not be accessible or reproduced by any person other than the voter..." the office cited in the referral.

Somebody's Playing Poltics, and It Ain't the DOJ
The Justice Department on Monday denied a request by the House Judiciary Committee to turn over documents related to the special counsel investigation into President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents.
In a letter addressed to the panel’s chair Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the department said it cannot turn over non-public files under its long-standing policy of not sharing information that could impact an ongoing probe.
“Disclosures to Congress about active investigations risk jeopardizing those investigations and creating the appearance that Congress may be exerting improper political pressure or attempting to influence Department decisions in certain cases,” the letter states.
The department added that a disclosure runs other risks too, including impairing the ability of prosecutors to interview relevant witnesses and bring charges.
But the committee doesn’t seem eager to accept the DOJ’s reasoning for not complying with its request.
“It’s concerning, to say the least, that the department is more interested in playing politics than cooperating,” Russell Dye, a spokesperson for Jordan, said, according to CNN.

It's Not a Problem. He's Really, Really Rich. He Told Us.
Former President Donald Trump is strapped for campaign cash following the mid-November launch of his 2024 presidential campaign, according to end-of-year figures obtained exclusively by NBC News.
Trump, who has been the GOP’s most prolific fundraiser in recent years, pulled in about $9.5 million over the final six weeks of last year through his campaign and a joint fundraising committee, according to a person familiar with his haul.

If They Want to Resurrect Extinct Species, How About Sane Republicans?
The list of extinct species that genetic engineering company Colossal wants to bring back to life is growing. The latest addition: the dodo.
Colossal gave life to real-world visions of Jurassic Park in 2021 with its mission of bringing back the woolly mammoth. In August 2022, the company, which has offices in Boston, Dallas and Austin, Texas, said it also planned to de-extinct the Australian thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger.
This new project, announced Tuesday, would bring back a species that's historically highlighted as a case of how humans can contribute to the extinction of an animal species.

This Doesn't Mean COVID Isn't Still Killing People. 3,756 in the Last Week
President Joe Biden's administration on Monday said it will end COVID-19 emergency declarations on May 11, nearly three years after the United States imposed sweeping pandemic measures to curb the spread of the illness.
The COVID-19 national emergency and public health emergency (PHE) were put in place in 2020 by then-President Donald Trump. Biden has repeatedly extended the measures, which allow millions of Americans to receive free tests, vaccines and treatments.

The QOP Focusces on the Important Stuff, Like a Literacy Test for QOP House Members.
Breaking Promises
Except, of course, that promise was broken. After four-plus days and 15 rounds of balloting, McCarthy just didn’t have time or energy for . . . the Constitution. Go figure. It still hasn’t happened.
They’ve moved on to other things, which are also nonsense. Like voting to denounce the horrors of socialism, one of the gotcha votes they’ll be bringing to the House floor this week. When it was introduced last session by Rep. Maria Salazar (R-FL), it was adopted as the “bill of the month” by FreedomWorks, the Freedom Caucus-affiliated dark money launderer.
They applauded the resolution for outlining “the history of socialism as a failed ideology that has resulted in the deaths of over 100 million people worldwide.” That’s in the text of the bill, too: “Whereas socialism has repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100,000,000 people worldwide.”
So Far No Information on Who Made Up the 100 Million Number.
