Electile Dysfunction : The inability to become aroused over any of the choices for President put forth by either party in an election.
Our House, Is a Very, Very, Very Fine House...For Now
"I (Nate Cohn of the NYT asked my friend Dave Wasserman, House editor of the Cook Political Report, whether he thought Democrats would appear to lead in the race for the House today if there were robust polling averages in every district, as there are in the Senate. He said they would, with Democrats leading the polls “in maybe 220 to 225 seats,” more than the 218 needed for a majority."
The latest change was just one of several adjustments over the past several months in the direction of Democrats. In July, Cook was predicting a GOP pickup of 20 to 35 seats. Now, the outlet is framing the "likeliest outcome" as a 5- to 20-seat gain for Republicans.

Blame Canada!
Sponsors have been pulling out of men's ice hockey programmes in Canada amid growing fallout from a sex assault scandal earlier this year.
Hockey Canada revealed it paid millions in settlements for sexual misconduct claims going back to the 1980s.
There have been calls for new management, but leadership has dug in its heels.
That has led to major sponsors leaving ahead of the 2022-2023 season.
Hockey Canada manages programmes and teams in the country from entry-level all the way to world championships and the Olympic Games.
Earlier this year, they confirmed they had paid almost C$9m ($6.5m; £5.8m) in 21 settlements for sex assault complaints against its players since 1989. The Globe and Mail reported that these settlements were paid with player registration fees the organisation collects from parents and youth across the country.

The Long Wait Is Over. It's Finally Fat Bear WeekFor humans, staying warm in the winter often means swapping out flimsy tank-tops for thick parkas. For Alaskan bears, it means eating a jaw-dropping 500lb (225 kg) of fresh salmon. These bulking creatures are the focal point of Fat Bear Week - a highly anticipated online bracket that pits the portly mammals at Alaska's Katmai National Park against one another, with voters crowning the fattest of them all. The competition is stiff this year: Otis, a large adult bear with the record for most Fat Bear Week wins at four, is back to defend his title. He once ate 42 salmon in one sitting, and his fishing skills and patience are hard to beat. But Bear 747, winner of Fat Bear Week 2020, might give Otis a run for his money. He is one of the largest bears on earth, weighing as much as 1,400lb (635kg). Most bears know they can't compete with him. The winner of Fat Bear Week 2022 remains to be seen. Voting is open until 11 October - Fat Bear Tuesday - when the champion will be crowned. Don't Forget to Vote (And In November)

Confession Is Good for the Soul ... And the Iranian Police
Relatives of a girl who died during protests in Iran have been forced into making false statements, a source close to the family has told BBC Persian.
Nika Shakarami, 16, went missing in Tehran on 20 September after telling a friend she was being chased by police.
On Wednesday night, a state TV report showed her aunt, Atash, saying: "Nika was killed falling from a building."
Her uncle was also seen on TV speaking against the unrest, as someone seems to whisper to him: "Say it, you scumbag!"
The source told BBC Persian that these were both "forced confessions" that came "after intense interrogations and being threatened that other family members would be killed".
Atash and Nika's uncle, Mohsen, were detained by authorities after Atash posted messages online about her niece's death and spoke to the media. The televised statements were recorded before they were released, according to the source.

For a Change, I Think Thoughts and Prayers Are Appropriate
A former police officer opened fire at a daycare centre in Thailand killing at least 35 people, mostly children, before turning a weapon on his family and then himself.
The attacker – armed with a shotgun, pistol and a knife – began the killing spree in Nong Bua Lamphu province at about 12:30pm (05:30 GMT) on Thursday before fleeing the scene in a pick-up truck. The dead included at least 23 children, said police Colonel Jakkapat Vijitraithaya. The gunman forced his way into a locked room where children were sleeping at the time, according to a witness.
After the attack, the gunman went home and killed his wife and child, Jakkapat said.
The attacker was named as former police officer Panya Khamrab, 34, and Jakkapat said he was dismissed from the force last year for drug use.

Doubling Down on Stupid and Obnoxious
A protester who ran onto the field during the San Francisco 49ers’ Monday night home game against the Rams has filed a police report after being subdued by Los Angeles linebacker Bobby Wagner.
Santa Clara Police Department Lt. Cuong Phan confirmed to The Associated Press on Wednesday that the department has an active investigation of the incident, which meant he could provide few other details. Wagner reacted with bemusement when asked about the protester’s complaint, which was made Tuesday.
“I heard about it, but it is what it is,” Wagner said at the Rams’ training complex. “It’s behind me. I ain’t really focused on it. I’m more concerned about the security guard that was hurt trying to chase him. We don’t know what that (pink smoke) is. You’ve just got to do what you’ve got to do.”
Wagner flattened the protester who ran across the field and toward the Rams’ sideline while waving a device emitting pink smoke shortly before halftime at Levi’s Stadium. Teammate Takk McKinley also helped as Wagner subdued the protester, who had eluded security during the run across the field, while another protester was caught before getting very far onto the field.
Wagner indicated that players and coaches have a right to be concerned in such situations.
“You just never know,” Wagner said. “People run on the field for no reason sometimes. Again, pretty sure it’s going to keep happening, but you never know what that person has got in their pocket, their hands, whatever. ... There’s consequences for your actions.”

Hershel Lie-Walker Had a Child With the Women He Says He Doesn't Know
The woman who alleges Herschel Walker paid for her abortion more than a decade ago also says she is the mother of one of his children, the Daily Beast reported Wednesday, an allegation that counters the Georgia Republican's claim that he does not know his accuser.
The news outlet said that when it published an article this week saying Walker had urged a woman to have an abortion in 2009 after he got her pregnant, it had agreed to not reveal her identity over her safety and privacy concerns.
But after Walker, who is challenging Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., for his seat, told Fox News on Wednesday morning that he did not know who the anonymous woman was and characterized the allegation as an attempt by Democrats to hurt his campaign, the woman told the Daily Beast that she was astounded by the comments. “Sure, I was stunned, but I guess it also doesn’t shock me, that maybe there are just so many of us that he truly doesn’t remember,” she told the news outlet. “But then again, if he really forgot about it, that says something, too.”

This is 200 Miles East of KhersonThe biggest news on Thursday morning seems to be something that hasn’t happened—a major Ukrainian counteroffensive into Zaporizhzhia, with forces reportedly being aimed at liberating Melitopol. Or maybe Berdyansk. Or Mariupol. If the force exists at all. In any case, multiple Russian sources are reporting a large build-up of Ukrainian vehicles south of the city of Zaporizhzhia in preparation for what looks to be the opening of a third counteroffensive. Russian forces are also reporting, disgustedly, that their leadership seems to be making no move to prepare for this new counter-invasion into what Vladimir Putin so recently declared “Russian territory.” If Ukraine can drive to the sea and liberate locations like Berdyansk, it would be an amazing repudiation of Russia’s invasion and a finger in the eye to the idea that Russia should control access to the Sea of Azov. If they can reach Mariupol … that could be an event that redefines the war, and reveals the scope of Russia’s crimes. How firmly does Russia control this area? If Ukraine penetrates beyond the front lines, will it be another town-to-town stroll, or a meter-by-meter fight? I have no idea. Russia Seems to Believe It

TucKGBer Goes Full Looney Toons
Tucker Carlson got way too animated on Wednesday, according to a supercut that highlighted his “complete meltdown.” (Watch it below.)
The clip includes the antics of the Fox News host reacting to media dismissal of his report that the United States could be behind the damage to the Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Europe.
Carlson laughed in wild bursts, did accents and looked a little unhinged in the video shared by Twitter user Kat Abu, who writes on her profile that she watches Carlson “so you don’t have to.”
Abu wrote that her coverage “is just another chapter in my regularly-updated saga of Tucker Carlson’s descent into madness.”

538 and RCP Poll Averages Have Warnock Up By 3.8%
A new poll conducted by Survey USA for Atlanta’s WXIA-TV shows Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock a gaudy 12 points ahead of Walker in their race for Georgia Senate.
The poll finds Warnock with a substantial lead over Walker, 50% to 38%, among 1,076 likely November voters.
SurveyUSA conducted the poll exclusively for 11Alive from Sept. 30 through Oct. 4, with 95% of it completed before The Daily Beast reported Monday night that Walker paid for a girlfriend's abortion in 2009. The Republican has publicly stated his opposition to abortion in all instances, and has denied the report and said he would sue, calling it a “flat-out lie."

The Mediterranean Goes "Fizz, Pop"
Think of this part of the Mediterranean as a cake made of liquid, essentially. Fierce sunlight heats the top layer of water that sits on cooler, deeper layers below. Out in the open ocean, where water temperatures are lower, CO2 dissolves in saltwater—which is what allows Earth’s seas to collectively absorb a quarter of the carbon emissions that humans pump into the atmosphere. But as the eastern Mediterranean Sea heats up in the summer, it can no longer absorb that gas and instead starts releasing it.
It’s the same thing that happens in a bottle of soda that is carbonated with carbon dioxide. “You usually keep it cold, so the dissolved gasses will stay dissolved,” says Or Bialik, a geoscientist at the University of Münster in Germany. “If you leave it in your car for a while and try to open it, all the gasses are going to pop out at once, because when it warms, the capacity of the fluid to hold CO2 goes down.” Boom, fizz, you’ve got a mess on your hands.
In the Eastern Mediterranean, this dynamic is rather more consequential for the climate than a sticky car interior, as the sea begins burping up great quantities of CO2 that the water can no longer hold. And Bialik and his colleagues have discovered that these warming, stratifying waters teem with a second carbon problem: The team recently caught aragonite crystals in sediment traps. Aragonite is a form of calcium carbonate, which oceanic creatures like snails use to build their shells. Except in the increasingly hot Eastern Mediterranean, the aragonite is forming abiotically. That’s another sign that the water is getting so warm that it’s releasing its carbon load.
In these hot, shallow, stable waters, the fluid on top doesn’t mix much with the underlying colder layers, in contrast to deeper parts of the ocean, where upwelling brings up cooler H2O. “The conditions are so extreme that we can definitely generate calcium carbonate chemically from these waters, which was kind of a shock for us,” says Bialik, who coauthored a recent paper describing the discovery in the journal Scientific Reports. (He did the research while at the University of Malta and University of Haifa.) “It's basically like a beaker that sits there for a very long time, and it's long enough to get these reactions going and start generating these crystals.”
It’s also worth noting that the Mediterranean Sea is one of the most microplastic-polluted water bodies in the world: In 2020, scientists reported finding 2 million particles in a single square meter of sediment that was only 5 centimeters thick. Whether aragonite crystals are forming around microplastics floating in the water column, Bialik doesn’t know. “They could probably form around any nucleation center,” says Bialik. “I suspect that microplastics may also be a possible one. But as scientists love to say, more research is needed.”

What Does Mastriano Have Against Polish People?
Pennsylvania state Sen. Doug Mastriano, who is the Republican candidate for governor, said he would ban pole dancing in schools if he was elected.
"On day one, the sexualization of our kids, pole dancing, and all this other crap that's going on will be forbidden in our schools," Mastriano says while on stage at an event, as seen in a video.
He also said he would ban "graphic, pornographic books that are in elementary schools" as well as critical race theory.
Does He Think People Hate Polkas That Much?
