Russians Trying to Leave Ukraine: "It's a Slaughter"
There has yet to be a good accounting of just how many Russian soldiers were killed or captured in Lyman and during the attempted retreat from the city. But when the death toll is tallied, it will no doubt be huge.
One soldier in that fight — an American volunteer — spoke over social media with a friend back home and described the gut-wrenching scene.
Here's a bit of it:
Moved north. its a slaughter cut them off west of kreminna. got to go.
Stay safe. Lyman totally cut off? I think so, engaging those going east. Ok, talk to you on the other side
Lot of people on foot, some running down the road, some trying to make their way through the forest to the south of the road. A half-a-dozen Russians came into the woods where we were in a hide to catch our breath and eat, they almost ran into us, but as usual, were moving fast and talking. We cut them down before they knew what was happening. They had little ammo, no med kits, very little food, and no info at all on them except for their phones and some family stuff. Trying to get intel off stiffs here is a very disappointing exercise.

What the Governments Are Saying
“In connection with the creation of a threat of encirclement, allied troops were withdrawn from the settlement of Krasny Liman to more advantageous lines,” Russia’s defence ministry said, using the Russian name of the city.
Ukraine’s defence ministry wrote on Twitter that “almost all” the Russian troops in Lyman had either been captured or killed.
Kherson and the Lyman Victory
As this was being written, both Russian and Ukrainian sources began reporting what looks to be a serious shift in Kherson. One Russian source indicates that Ukrainian forces are “pouring in” along “the whole northern border.” Another insists they have to retreat because the Ukrainian forces “have many vehicles.”
I don’t yet have enough specifics to map what’s happening. As best I can tell, the major push seems to be just a few miles on the west side of the Dnipro River. It seems like Ukraine may be about to come at the Kherson area in a whole new way. Stay tuned.
My Comments
In Lyman, Ukraine did not attempt to directly attack the city. That could have involved brutal house-to-house fighting, and massive destruction of the city. Instead, they surrounded Lyman, forcing the Russians to try to withdraw. The result was a Russian bloodbath and tons of abandoned Russian equipment that the Ukrainians will use in future battles.
It appears they are doing the same in Kherson, attacking east of the city, instead of going directly toward it. I think that is smart.
What Happens Next After Lyman in the North?
Ukraine has many options, now that they are over the Oskil River. Recapturing Lyman could let Ukrainian soldiers reach more contested territory in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

What Him Worry About $3 Million? It's Not His Money. After grabbing a jaw-dropping $3 million advance to represent Donald Trump, high-profile Florida attorney Chris Kise has largely been sidelined because he supports something the former president can’t get behind: a calmer legal approach, The Washington Post reported Friday. After much fanfare upon joining Trump’s legal team just weeks ago, Kise seemed to quickly sink without a trace. He was paid — not by Trump but reportedly by his key fundraising operation, the Save America political action committee — to represent the former president after the FBI seized White House records at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida resort, in August. Yet Kise did not appear to play a role in the latest filing in the Justice Department case Wednesday night. That’s because he wants to reduce tensions with the department in the clash over the documents, sources told the Post. Now that officials have the records, perhaps prosecutors could be persuaded to settle the issue quickly and quietly, Kise reportedly counseled his new client, who wasn’t receptive to the message. Amid the upset, infighting among lawyers on Trump’s team has continued for a week or more, the Post reported. The paper’s sources said that Kise, a former solicitor general, has quietly questioned the wisdom and experience of some members of the team. He reportedly fears that they may already have worsened Trump’s situation and could even face legal trouble of their own. Kise doesn’t appear to be making much headway with the legal team — or Trump. His name wasn’t even on the Wednesday filing, in which Trump’s attorneys combatively questioned the Justice Department’s honesty and motives.

Barefoot in the Park War
Yevgeny Prigozhin, Putin’s former chef who now runs Putin’s private army Wagner Group that is also flailing in Ukraine, has verbally attacked Russian military leaders, writing:
Send all these pieces of garbage barefoot with machine guns straight to the front.
This pretty much describes what Putin is already doing to his conscripts, no? What Prigozhin is saying is that Putin should also feed the the Russian army’s officers directly into the meat grinder. Which would leave Prigozhin’s Wagner Group in charge.
