University of Oregon Can Change the Colors of their Uniforms, But They Can't Change Their True Colors
A representative of the University of Oregon apologized after video posted to social media appeared to show fans of the school's football team chanting an expletive directed at fans of Brigham Young University, a private university of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at their football game Saturday.
The chant targeted members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who are known as Mormons, leading Utah's governor, Spencer Cox, to decry the incident as a form of "religious bigotry" on Twitter on Saturday night.
Oregon's interim vice president for student life, Kris Winter, said in a statement Saturday night that "the university apologizes for the despicable chants made by some University of Oregon fans at today’s football game with Brigham Young University."
"There is no place for hate, bias or bigotry at the University of Oregon," she said. "These actions are simply unacceptable. We will investigate, and we call on our students and campus community to refuse to accept or tolerate this type of behavior."
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox ripped rowdy irreverent fans who chanted “f—k the Mormons” during a football match between Oregon and BYU Saturday.

Cracking Kherson
The gains aren’t as dramatic as a week ago, but Ukraine is steadily pushing forward. Look at that cauldron forming in northern Kherson as Ukrainian forces expand the Davydiv Brid bridgehead toward Beryslav and Nova Kakhovka, simultaneously putting pressure from the top. Russian forces are in danger of being cut in half.
Beryslav also hosts of one of Russia’s notorious concentration “filtration” camps. I’m not looking forward to the horrors they will unearth when it is liberated.

Martha Would Be Proud of the People Who Live On Her Vineyard
An Englishman, Bartholomew Gosnold, arrived in 1602. Gosnold named the island “Martha’s Vineyard,” probably after his daughter, and because he found wild grapes on the island.

Smart Politics. Bad Public Policy.
President Joe Biden claimed that the COVID-19 pandemic was over while also admitting that the U.S. still faces problems with the coronavirus during a “60 Minutes” segment that aired on CBS on Sunday.
While touring the North American International Auto Show in Detroit with Biden, CBS correspondent Scott Kelley asked the president whether the pandemic was over, considering the return of in-person events and lack of masking requirements.
The pandemic is over,” Biden replied. “We still have a problem with COVID. We’re still doing a lot of work on it … but the pandemic is over.”
“If you notice, no one’s wearing masks. Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape. And so I think it’s changing. And I think this is a perfect example of it,” the president added.
The president’s claims of the pandemic being finished are largely overshadowed by recent COVID-19 data in the U.S.
In the last month, there have been 2.2 million new infections reported in the U.S., with 13,606 deaths, according to John Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. According to the New York Times COVID-19 tracker, the U.S. is averaging around 465 deaths per day.
Biden has asked Congress for $22.4 billion more in funding to prepare for a potential fall case surge.

Let them Laugh, Let Them Dance, Let Them Have Fun Like Crazy People
Video footage shared on social media showing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau performing a rendition of Queen's classic Bohemian Rhapsody while visiting London is authentic, a spokesperson for the prime minister's office said.
According to social media posts, it appeared that Trudeau also took some time out to let his proverbial hair down with the delegation that had joined him from Canada.
Translation of Le Moribond by Jacques Brel
Goodbye Emilio I like you very much Goodbye Emilio I like you very much you know We have sung about the same wine We have sung of the same women We have sung about the same miseries
Goodbye Emile I am going to die It is hard to die in the springtime you know But I leave the flowers and peace in my soul And because I know you are as good as white bread I know that you will take care of my wife
Chorus:
Let them laugh, Let them dance Let them fun like crazy people Let them laugh Let them dance Amuse themselves like crazy when they put me in the hole

Ukraine's New Favorite Meal. A Russian Sandwich
Some Russian troops have now found themselves "sandwiched" between Ukrainian forces and the Dnipro River, Nataliya Humenyuk, who serves as the head of the joint press center of Ukrainian Defense Forces of the South, said during an appearance on the Ukrainian parliament's television channel on Monday.
"The fire control that we maintain over crossings and transport arteries across the Dnipro makes them understand that they are sandwiched between the defense forces and the right bank—units that are in this part of the Kherson region," she said, according to The New Voice of Ukraine.
She added that Russian troops were offered a way out "under the auspices of international humanitarian law" or were given the chance to return to their home.
Humenyuk also said she received information that Russian troops were demoralized and that some don't see any need to stay trapped between Ukrainian troops at the Dnipro River, according to The New Voice of Ukraine.

Poorly Trained, Poorly Equipped. How Will they Face the Professional Foreign Headcutters?
Russian President Vladimir Putin is increasingly relying on poorly trained volunteers in his war against Ukraine, according to a U.S.-based think tank.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said Sunday that the Russian leader is deploying more irregular volunteer and proxy forces over conventional units and formations of the army, amid a souring relationship with the military command.
The Kremlin, particularly after Ukraine's successful counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region, is increasingly recruiting ill-prepared volunteers into ad-hoc irregular units rather than attempting to draw them into reserve or replacement pools for regular Russian combat units.
The ISW also said that Russia is using prisoners, involving Cossack units, deploying elements of security services such as the Russian Federal Security Service and the National Guard of the Russian Federation, and covertly mobilizing men from the occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the Donbas in Ukraine.
Retired Russian officers are criticizing the approach, calling for the formation of proper conventional divisions rather than volunteer battalions, the report said.
"The formation of such ad-hoc units will lead to further tensions, inequality, and an overall lack of cohesiveness between forces," the ISW said.
The think tank noted that as all of these groups are likely to have varying levels of military training, and different perceptions of Putin's war and motivations to fight, there is likely to be poor unit coordination and conflict within them.
"The one thing they have in common is wholly inadequate training and preparation for combat," the ISW said.
The report came days after British intelligence said Russia is experiencing "increasingly severe" challenges in terms of manpower shortages on the frontline of the Ukraine war.
Britain's Ministry of Defense said in a daily intelligence update on Friday that the Kremlin-linked private military company the Wagner Group has been on a recruitment drive for Russian convicts to serve in Ukraine since "at least July," and that Russia's manpower is likely struggling.

Buckeyes or Previous Guy?
Ohioans were glued to their TV screens Saturday night during Donald Trump’s rally for Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance. But they were far more likely to be watching an Ohio State football game rather than anything political.
The fumbling schedule for the rally was very unfortunately held the same time as an Ohio State game against the University of Toledo. (The Buckeyes won 77-21). That happened because Trump and Vance “apparently don’t know how Ohio works,” Mediaite quipped last week. The Columbus Dispatch reported last week that a record-breaking 10.5 million viewers tuned in to Ohio State’s game against the University of Notre Dame earlier this month.
Not to Mention All the Toledo Football Fans

The Million Dollar Saint
Saint Javelin doesn’t grace the stained-glass windows of any church. Her halo is a shade of yellow closer to that of sunflowers and wheat than the golden orb on a traditionally canonized saint. Instead of an infant, she tenderly cradles a Javelin — an American-made, handheld antitank missile.
The Mary knockoff might not be a church-sanctioned saint, but in just a few months, she’s developed a following with devotion that rivals that of any high-holiday worshiper. More impressively, she’s raised over 1 million dollars for the Ukrainian resistance against the Russian invasion.
The business is the brainchild of Christian Borys, a former journalist based in Canada, who spent years covering conflict in Ukraine and beyond. A portion of the profits is used to support Ukraine. Borys helped create the image as it’s known now — one that’s now on countless laptops, T-shirts, flags, murals, and even tattoos around the world. His growing team has expanded the roster of weapon-toting saints, selling branded stickers, accessories, and apparel primarily online. On the company’s website, he’s boiled down the mission into a single sentence: “We are in business to re-build Ukraine.”
He’s not an artist, but more a specific kind of storyteller keen on hooking people into an issue by catching their attention with something absurd, funny, or shocking. The campaign has been so effective it earned Borys a spot on Russia’s official blacklist.

Another Investigation Moves Forward
Mazars USA, the longtime accounting firm for former President Donald J. Trump that cut ties with him and his family business this year, has begun turning over documents related to his financial dealings to Congress.
After a yearslong legal fight, the House Oversight Committee has received a first trove of documents from the firm, which recently entered into a legal settlement agreeing to produce a range of financial documents from several years before Mr. Trump took office and during his early presidency. Mazars said in February it could no longer stand behind a decade of annual financial statements it had prepared for the Trump Organization.
More tranches of documents are expected to follow. In 2019, Michael D. Cohen, Mr. Trump’s former personal attorney, testified before the committee that Mr. Trump’s financial statements had falsely represented the former president’s assets and liabilities and that Mr. Trump had “inflated his total assets when it served his purposes” and, at other times, “deflated his assets to reduce his real estate taxes.”
The committee then issued a subpoena to Mazars, prompting Mr. Trump to file a lawsuit against the firm to prevent the company from complying. The committee subsequently won a series of legal victories, including before the Supreme Court in July 2020.
This month, the committee reached a settlement with Mr. Trump and Mazars that allows the panel to obtain key financial documents.
The agreement states that Mazars must turn over any documents between 2014 and 2018 that indicate any false or undisclosed information about Mr. Trump’s assets, income or liabilities; communications related to any potential concerns that financial information provided by Mr. Trump’s companies was inaccurate; documents from November 2016 to 2018 related to the Old Post Office Building, a federal property in Washington that Mr. Trump’s company converted into a hotel through a lease deal; and documents from 2017 and 2018 related to relationships between Mr. Trump’s businesses and foreign states.
The settlement allows for Mazars to exercise its “independent judgment” in determining which documents are responsive to the committee’s subpoena.
