Why is it called "tourist season", if we can't shoot them?
Speaking of Shooting, How Lucky is This Woman?
Argentina's vice-president has narrowly avoided assassination after a gunman's weapon jammed as he aimed at her.
Footage shows the moment Cristina Fernández de Kirchner - surrounded by a mob of supporters - found herself face-to-face with the loaded weapon.
The former president was arriving home from court, where she faces allegations of corruption. She denies the charges.
Police said the gunman, who local media identified as a 35-year-old Brazilian man, has been taken into custody.
They are attempting to establish a motive for the attack on the left-leaning politician, who was Argentina's president from 2007 to 2015, and its first lady for four years before that.
President Alberto Fernández revealed the gun was loaded with five bullets, but failed to fire when triggered.

This is a Bit of a Sticky Wicket
Environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion supporters entered the House of Commons debating chamber and superglued themselves around the speaker’s chair on Friday.
The climate change demonstrators posted a photo of five people inside the chamber holding banners reading, “Let the people decide” and “Citizens’ Assembly now.”
The group also hung a large banner bearing the same words from scaffolding on the estate, and protesters padlocked themselves to gates outside parliament.
Parliament is not currently sitting.
Britain’s House of Commons said it was dealing with an incident on the parliamentary estate.
“We are aware of an incident on the Parliamentary Estate and are currently dealing with the situation as a matter of urgency,” the House of Commons said in a statement.
Certain areas of the parliamentary complex are usually open to the public, although access to the debating chamber is usually restricted to guided tours.
Extinction Rebellion, a group that previously caused days of traffic chaos in central London, typically protests against climate change issues.
It said the protesters were reading a speech that included the words: “We are in crisis. We cannot afford to carry on like this.”
What Exactly Did They Glue Down? Body Parts? Clothing? ............... The phrase "sticky wicket" comes from the game of cricket. "Wicket" has several meanings in cricket: in this case it refers to the rectangular area, also known as the pitch, in the centre of the cricket field between the stumps. The wicket is usually covered in a much shorter grass than the rest of the field or entirely bare, making it susceptible to variations in weather, which in turn cause the ball to bounce differently.[4]

This is Favre From Helping the Needy
Brett Favre earned nearly $140 million as a star NFL quarterback over two decades and millions more in product endorsements.
But that didn’t stop the state of Mississippi from paying Favre $1.1 million in 2017 and 2018 to make motivational speeches — out of federal welfare funds intended for needy families. The Mississippi state auditor said Favre never gave the speeches and demanded the money back, with interest.
Favre has repaid the fees, although not the $228,000 in interest the auditor also demanded. But the revelation by the auditor that $70 million in TANF welfare funds was doled out to a multimillionaire athlete, a professional wrestler, a horse farm and a volleyball complex are at the heart of a scandal that has rocked the nation’s poorest state, sparking parallel state and federal criminal investigations that have led to charges and guilty pleas involving some of the key players.
Favre hasn’t been accused of a crime or charged, and he declined an interview. His lawyer, Bud Holmes, said he did nothing wrong and never understood he was paid with money intended to help poor children. Holmes acknowledged that the FBI had questioned Favre in the case, a fact that hasn’t previously been reported.
Who Thinks the Cure for Poverty is Motivational Speeches and Volleyball?

The QOP Fears Another Low-Quality Candidate
Deep-pocketed Republicans are taking action two weeks ahead of 2022's final Senate primary to ensure that the party nominates state Senate President Chuck Morse rather than retired Army Brig. General Donald Bolduc, a far-right conspiracy theorist who has posted wide leads in two recent polls even though he's raised very little money. Politico reports that White Mountain PAC, an organization that was only set up on Tuesday, has reserved as much as $4.1 million on an ad campaign to promote Morse in the Sept. 13 primary to take on Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan.
Godzilla vs Rodan
The long-simmering tensions between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), the chair of the GOP’s Senate campaign arm, are once again spilling out into the open, with a little over two months to go before the midterms.
McConnell — along with many other Republicans — has privately raised doubts for months about his party’s roster of Senate candidates and chances of recapturing control of the upper chamber in November. But with those concerns becoming increasingly apparent, Scott has begun to dig in his heels.
In an interview with Politico this week, the National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman acknowledged a “strategic disagreement” with McConnell. On Thursday, Scott penned an op-ed for the Washington Examiner in which he accused “the very people responsible for losing the Senate last cycle” of “trash-talking our Republican candidates.”
“If you want to talk about the need to raise more money to promote our candidates versus the Democrats’ terrible candidates, I agree. If you want to trash-talk our candidates to help the Democrats, pipe down,” Scott wrote. “That’s not what leaders do.”
Scott’s op-ed did not explicitly mention McConnell, a seasoned political operator known for taking a keen interest in his party’s approach to campaigning. But Scott’s message was unmistakable, coming just two weeks after McConnell downplayed the GOP’s prospects of recapturing control of the Senate and took a thinly veiled swipe at the quality of some of the party’s candidates.
“I think there’s probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate,” McConnell said during an appearance in his home state last month. “Senate races are just different. They’re statewide, candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome.”

The Heat is On ... the QOP
Independent voters, a key to victory in competitive general elections, are now tilting toward Democrats
Democrats hold a slight edge over Republicans, 47% to 44%, when voters are asked which party they would support in their congressional district if the election were held today, a lead that is within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points. Republicans had a five-point advantage in March.
The Democratic gains come from increased support among independents, women and younger voters. Black and Hispanic voters, who have traditionally favored Democrats heavily, are also more solidly supportive of the party than they were earlier this year.
Among political independents, typically the key to victory in close elections, more voters now favor a Democratic candidate for Congress than a Republican, 38% to 35%. In March, Republicans led among independents by 12 percentage points.
A majority of registered voters (56%) say the issue of abortion will be very important in their midterm vote, up from 43% in March. Virtually all of the increase has come among Democrats: 71% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning registered voters rate abortion as very important; fewer than half (46%) said this in March. By contrast, views among Republicans and GOP leaners have shown almost no change since then (41% now, 40% then).

Are You Looking for Insight? Don't Read this NYT Guy.“As the President spoke, some listened, some didn’t. Many listeners liked what he said, while those who didn't listen didn’t like it. Who can know if it will make a difference? It’s hard to say.” Is He Telling People to Read Time?

"FBI seizes documents from Putin buddy's properties"
This is an interesting AP News article...apparently, the FBI has searched two properties in New York and one in Miami “linked to” Viktor Vekselberg, a “close ally” of Putin.
From the AP article: “A federal task force has been looking into Russian oligarchs and the money trail that helps fuel Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, and the task force is working to enforce U.S. financial restrictions imposed on Russia and its billionaires. A spokesperson for the task force declined to comment.”
I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that the FBI has seized boxes of documents recently from another known friend and associate of Vladimir Putin.

A Clear Sign of the End of the World
In a viral video, a Southwest Airlines pilot was recorded threatening to turn a flight to Mexico around, forcing all passengers to leave, if they didn’t stop airdropping nudes to fellow flyers.
The footage has raked up over 3 million views and was captured by traveler Teighlor Marsalis, who goes by @teighmars on TikTok, during the flight to Cabo San Lucas.
“So here’s the deal: If this continues while we’re on the ground, I’m going to have to pull back to the gate, everybody’s going to have to get off, we’re going to have to get security involved, and [your] vacation is going to be ruined,” the pilot says in the clip.
He added: “So you folks, whatever that AirDrop thing is, quit sending naked pictures, and let’s get yourself to Cabo.”
The “AirDrop thing” the pilot mentioned refers to iPhone users’ ability to send photos or other files to iPhones near them. It is unclear how many people were involved in the incident and who received the nude photos.
Southwest said it cannot “validate the date, time or authenticity” of the video in a statement to People.
“The safety, security and wellbeing of Customers and Employees is the Southwest Team’s highest priority at all times. When made aware of a potential problem, our employees address issues to support the comfort of those traveling with us,” the company added.
Two months ago, a viral TikTok showed a flight attendant confronting a man on another Southwest flight who was caught allegedly AirDropping photos of his genitalia to other travelers.

Hip 65426 b, Hip 65426 b, Hooray! NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has captured its first direct images of a planet beyond our solar system. The planet, called HIP 65426 b, is a gas giant with no rocky surface, which means it likely cannot support alien life, according to astronomers who described the images in a NASA blog post published Thursday. The scientists are preparing a paper about the observations, but the findings have yet to be peer-reviewed. The observations are notable, however, because they hint at how the Webb telescope could be used to search for potentially habitable planets elsewhere in the universe. "This is a transformative moment, not only for Webb but also for astronomy generally," Sasha Hinkley, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, said in a statement. Hinkley led the observations of HIP 65426 b with an international team. The exoplanet is located about 355 light-years away from Earth and was first discovered in 2017, according to NASA. The gas giant is up to 12 times the mass of Jupiter and its orbit is around 100 times farther from its host star than Earth is from the sun.

Here's Hoping California Leads the Way
California took some of its most aggressive steps yet to fight global warming as lawmakers passed a flurry of new climate bills late Wednesday, including a record $54 billion in climate spending, a measure to prevent the state’s last nuclear power plant from closing, sharp new restrictions on oil and gas drilling and a mandate that California stop adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by 2045.
The bills, passed around midnight at the end of a frenzied two-year legislative session in Sacramento, marked a victory for Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat who has sought to portray himself as a climate leader as he has raised his national profile and begun drawing speculation about a possible White House run.
Newsom upended the legislative session in mid-August when he urged lawmakers to pass several major new climate bills. In the end, all of his proposals passed but one: a bill to strengthen the state’s 2030 target for slashing planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions, which fell short by four votes in the state Assembly.
