Humans. Dumber Than the Average WalrusA walrus that had become a popular attraction in the Oslo Fjord has been put down out of concern for the safety of the public, Norwegian officials say. The walrus, nicknamed Freya, rose to fame after clambering on to boats to sunbathe - sometimes sinking them. People refused warnings not to get too close to the 1,300lb (600kg) animal, putting her and themselves at risk. On one occasion, police blocked off a bathing area after the walrus chased a woman into the water, local media say. Last week, Norway's fisheries ministry issued a photograph of a large group of people, including children, standing within touching distance of the animal. He added that other options had been considered, including moving Freya out of the fjord, but they had been discarded out of concern for the welfare of the walrus. What? Out of Concern for the Welfare of the Walrus, They Killed It? Huh?

It's Not Just Violent MAGAs Who Are Out of Control.
Police are investigating an online threat to JK Rowling, after she tweeted support for Salman Rushdie following his attack in the US.
The Harry Potter author, 57, shared screenshots of a message stating: "Don't worry, you are next".
The same Twitter account also posted messages praising the man who attacked Mr Rushdie on stage at an event in New York state.
Ms Rowling said she felt "very sick" at the news and hoped he would recover.
She shared a screenshot of the threat, writing: "To all sending supportive messages. Thank you. Police are involved (were already involved on other threats)."
There are 30 Million Houses in France. There are 662 Golf Courses. Will Getting Rid of All the Golf Courses (That Usually Use Recycled Water) Make a Difference?
Climate activists in southern France have filled golf course holes with cement to protest against the exemption of golf greens from water bans amid the country's severe drought.
The group targeted sites near the city of Toulouse, calling golf the "leisure industry of the most privileged".
The exemption of golf greens has sparked controversy as 100 French villages are short of drinking water.
Golf officials say greens would die in three days without water.

The Grain from Ukraine Is Not Just Shipped by Train
The first ship carrying Ukrainian wheat to be exported under a UN-brokered deal has arrived in Istanbul, according to the Joint Coordination Centre based in the Turkish city.
The Belize-flagged vessel is the first to carry wheat from Ukraine through the Black Sea since Russia’s invasion. The Sormovsky was loaded with 3,050 tonnes of wheat and had left Ukraine’s port of Chornomorsk on Friday.
The ship was seen crossing the Bosphorus Strait and docking there, awaiting inspection.
It was the first shipment of wheat from Ukraine, which, along with Russia, accounted for nearly a third of global wheat exports before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

Send in the Troops, While the Generals SkedaddleRussia continues to flood forces into the Kherson area in response to Ukraine’s repeated declarations that it is just this close from launching its long-expected counter-offensive to retake its land. The whole situation continues to have the feel of a trap as Ukraine systematically eliminates ammunition depots and supply routes into the region. This now means that both supply routes into the west side of the Dnipro river in the Kherson region are now blown. Only two bridges connect Kherson and all that red territory to the north of the Dnipro river. The Antonovsky bridge near Kherson (which remains inoperable), and the bridge at Nova Kakhovka. This is why the betrayal at the beginning of the war was so painful—all Ukraine had to do was blow both bridges and Russia would’ve never been able to take Kherson. Local government officials conspired with Russians to sabotage the city’s defense, and countless lives have been lost as a result, and countless more will do so in the months ahead. Russia isn’t surrendering that territory without a fight, but … its generals may have lost their appetite for being on the wrong side of the Dnipro.

There Are Tapes! There Are Tapes! (And a Grand Jury)
Donald Trump's possession of documents marked with top secret classification at Mar-a-Lago was the focus of another bombshell report published online by The New York Times on Saturday evening.
"Last year, officials with the National Archives discovered that Mr. Trump had taken a slew of documents and other government material with him when he left the White House at the end of his tumultuous term in January 2021. That material was supposed to have been sent to the archives under the terms of the Presidential Records Act," Maggie Haberman and Glenn Thrush reported. "Mr. Trump returned 15 boxes of material in January of this year. When archivists examined the material, they found many pages of documents with classified markings and referred the matter to the Justice Department, which began an investigation and convened a grand jury."
A subpoena was reportedly sent in the spring demanding the return of the classified public records.
On June 3, Jay I. Bratt, the top counterintelligence official in the DOJ’s national security division, visited Mar-a-Lago and the newspaper reported "Bratt and his team left with additional material marked classified, and around that time also obtained the written declaration from a Trump lawyer attesting that all the material marked classified in the boxes had been turned over."
The subpoena for the records' return was not the only subpoena DOJ sent in the case.
"The Justice Department also subpoenaed surveillance footage from Mar-a-Lago recorded over a 60-day period, including views from outside the storage room. According to a person briefed on the matter, the footage showed that, after one instance in which Justice Department officials were in contact with Mr. Trump’s team, boxes were moved in and out of the room," The Times reported. "That activity prompted concern among investigators about the handling of the material. It is not clear when precisely the footage was from during the lengthy back-and-forth between Justice Department officials and Mr. Trump’s advisers, or whether the subpoena to Mr. Trump seeking additional documents had already been issued.

Marco Rubio Goes Anti-Semitic
The Florida federal magistrate judge who approved the FBI search of former President Donald Trump’s Palm Beach County residence has faced an onslaught of antisemitic attacks and threats online, some of which targeted the synagogue he belongs to.
Aryeh Tuchman, a senior associate director for the Anti-Defamation League’s Center for Extremism, said his organization is “monitoring the increased level of threat language generally, and also towards the specific judge.”
“I think it’s fair to say certainly where the judge is concerned, reports of vitriol directed at him and the synagogue have increased,” he said.
Tuchman said that the synagogue [the judge] belongs to has additional security in place and had to cancel an outdoor service due to concerns of violence.
If the Race is Close, Can Marco Afford to Lose the Jewish Vote in Florida?
EMILY’s List — a national group supporting pro abortion rights candidates — released a poll showing Democratic U.S. Rep. Val Demings and Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio tied in Florida’s 2022 U.S. Senate contest.
The poll, done by Change Research, a Democratic polling firm out of California, finds both candidates drew 46% in a survey of likely Florida voters, with 7% saying they are unsure and 2% saying they would not vote.
Demings is the anticipated Democratic challenger in the November General Election. She first must win the Aug. 23 Democratic Primary Election against several nominal opponents.
It’s the second consecutive poll commissioned by partisans that characterizes the General Election race as essentially tied. A poll released earlier this week by Progress Florida and Florida Watch, two progressive groups, had Rubio and Demings both at 45%.
There haven’t been any polls released on Florida’s U.S. Senate contest by major, unaffiliated outfits released for a while. A poll released in July by Center Street had Rubio up by 8 points. That poll also showed Demings gaining from previous surveys.
Since then, both candidates have gone up on TV with statewide television commercials.
