I have been watching an athletic team play against a bigger, stronger team, and I was struck by some of the similarities between the roster of the athletic team and out current team.
In 1995, you might have had concerns about what would happen when our team me a strong, physical team like Oklahoma State with Big Country Reeves.
Let's compare the 1995 team with this year's model. 4 of the starters are quite similar.
In 1995 we had a potential All-American forward in Ed O'Bannon (Jaime Jaquez).
We had Tyus Edney (Tyger Campbell) an undersized, but very smart veteran PG who was an assist machine.
We had a very talented freshman SG in Tobey Bailey (Amari, the new Bailey).
We had an athletic wing named Charles O'Bannon (Jaylen Clark), who did everything well.
The centers couldn't be more different. In 1995, we had George Zidek, a slow, but skilled center who was backed up by a wing player. This year we will have a much more athletic, talented center, but with less bulk and experience.
Of course, I am not predicting we hang a banner this season. It is just that speed and athleticism will generally beat size and strength.
I am currently watching the Oklahoma State game, where our athleticism was matched up with their size and strength. I suppose you remember who won that one. BTW, it was a terrific game.
In 1995, the big physical Reeves ate Zidek alive, going off for 25 points and 9 rebounds. Zidek only played 19 minutes. For the majority of the game, Henderson was matched up with Reeves.
