Breaking News! Mitch McConnell is a Hypocrite.
The Post’s editorial board similarly highlights the absurdity and outrage of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell claiming he opposes Jackson in part because she would not answer questions on court expansion—when her answers directly echoed those of Amy Coney Barrett, whose nomination McConnell rushed through while the nation was voting on a new president.
Republican senators’ hypocrisy peaks when they complain that Democrats mistreated past GOP nominees, such as Justice Barrett and Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh. It was Republicans who obliterated the last shreds of goodwill in the judicial confirmation process when they blocked then-Judge Merrick Garland, whom President Barack Obama nominated in 2016 to replace the late Antonin Scalia, based on scant principle whatsoever.
Republicans then forced through Kavanaugh despite credible sexual assault allegations that did not receive a full investigation, and Barrett despite—and this cannot be repeated enough—the fact that voting had already started in the 2020 presidential election. They have not a teeny tiny shred of principle to stand on, and it is past time for the traditional media to see the way Republicans have turned ruthless partisan hypocrisy into the core of their party’s identity and say it out loud, rather than pretending to take at face value their claims about things like opposing the confirmation of a massively qualified judge to the Supreme Court.
A Tale of Two Nominations. It Was the Best of Times. It Was the Worst of Times
A Quinnipiac University poll this week was the latest to show relatively strong support for Jackson’s confirmation: 51 percent supported it, while 30 percent opposed it. Support for her is higher than it was for the confirmations of Trump’s last two nominees, including Kavanaugh, whose confirmation Americans opposed. A CNN poll showed Americans opposed it by as much as double digits.
It’s true that, even as Americans opposed Kavanaugh’s confirmation, they generally disliked how Democrats handled his confirmation hearings — specifically, it seems, their handling of decades-old sexual misconduct allegations. The CNN poll showed 56 percent gave them negative reviews, while just 36 percent gave them positive ones.
But the reviews of how Republicans approached Jackson’s hearings — and seemingly her record on child pornography cases, the main line of attack — are quite poor. Just 27 percent of Americans approve of their approach, compared to 52 percent who disapprove. That’s a 25-point gap, compared with the 20-point gap in the CNN poll for Democrats and Kavanaugh. (There are also more undecideds this time, perhaps reflecting that Jackson’s hearings received less attention.)
Who Says Previous Guy Doesn't Have a Prayer? Maybe That's All He Has.
From his most recent rally (or whatever it was):
"So we pray. Father in heaven, we firmly believe that Donald J. Trump is the current and true president of the United States. You have raised him up for this season of time to be used and be part in saving a nation. Bless and protect him and his family from any physical, spiritual attacks and may his voice stir the people to righteous action to bring godly men and women into elected office, in Michigan and across America."
"We declare he will be back in office soon. VERY soon. In Jesus' name. Amen. We pray the fraud in the 2020 election will continue to be exposed and the election decertified in Michigan. The battleground state in our nation. In Jesus' name."
This Will Happen Just After Previous Guy Releases His Findings on Obama's Birth Certificate and His Own Tax Returns
"And just to cover it quickly, because I don't want to take a lot of time, but it's coming, out this 'Truth to Vote,' where they found all the thousands and thousands of ballot harvesters. You've seen that. 'Truth to Vote.' But when you see that - that's coming out in two weeks - when you see those numbers, I think it's four or five million people cheating. Those numbers are coming out."
Does He Know That Palin and Putin Aren't the Same Person?
To almost no one’s surprise, former President Donald Trump on Sunday endorsed right-wing champion Sarah Palin for an open House seat in Alaska, hailing her as a “wonderful patriot.”
Trump was reportedly instrumental in convincing her to run to fill the seat of long-term conservative Republican Don Young, who died last month at the age of 88. Palin announced she was running last Friday. It’s Alaska’s only congressional seat.
“Sarah shocked many when she endorsed me early in 2016, and we won big,” boasted Trump in a statement. “Now it’s my turn. Sarah has been a champion for Alaska values, Alaska energy, Alaska jobs, and the great people of Alaska.” And she’s against the “fake news,” Trump noted.
He claimed Palin “lifted the [John] McCain presidential campaign out of the dumps despite the fact that she had to endure some very evil, stupid and jealous people.”
In fact, gaffe-prone Palin was widely viewed as grossly unqualified to be a vice president (certainly not a president), and a key reason why Sen. McCain didn’t have a better shot at the presidency against Democrat Barack Obama in the 2008 election. McCain himself later said he regretted his decision to name Palin as his running mate.

Thank You For Your Service. Now Get the Truck Out of Here!
President Joe Biden on Monday plans to highlight the progress made on his administration's plan to boost trucking employment in an effort to strengthen U.S. supply chains.
In afternoon remarks, Biden is expected to say that last year was the best on record for trucking job growth since 1994, the White House said. After the administration introduced its plan to boost trucking employment in December, the U.S. has had the best three-month stretch for long-distance trucking hiring since the 1990s, it said.
Biden will discuss the effort to expedite the issuing of commercial driver's licenses needed to operate trucks. The White House said since Jan. 2021, states have issued more than 876,000 of those special licenses, and trucking employment now exceeds pre-pandemic levels by 35,000 jobs.
The administration has also made it a priority to hire more military veterans and women into the industry, which is dominated by men. As part of the plan, the industry has partnered with major veterans' organizations "to support the recruitment and retention of veterans and military family members in trucking," the White House said.

Another Yacht Bites the Dust. And Another One Gone, and Another One Gone.
The U.S. government seized a mega yacht in Spain owned by an oligarch with close ties to the Russian president on Monday, the first in the government’s sanctions initiative to “seize and freeze” giant boats and other pricey assets of Russian elites.
A Civil Guard source told The Associated Press that the immobilized yacht is Tango, a 78-meter (254-feet) vessel that carries Cook Islands flag and valued at $120 million.

How to Tell If You Have COVID (At Least If You are in the UK)
The original signs of a Covid infection that were recognised in the UK were:
-fever
-new continuous cough
-loss of sense of smell or taste
It was known from the early days of the pandemic that this trio was just the tip of the iceberg. The World Health Organization and other countries, including the US, have used a longer list of symptoms for some time.
But now the list of symptoms includes a further nine:
-shortness of breath
-feeling tired or exhausted
-aching body
-headache
-sore throat
-blocked or runny nose
-loss of appetite
-diarrhoea
-feeling sick or being sick
Covid infections are at a record level in the UK, with 4.9 million people (about one in 13 of us) testing positive for the virus. Free testing for most people in England ended last week.

Today's Farming Tip: Don't Try to Raise Crops in the Desert.
An intensifying drought and declining reservoir levels across the Western U.S. prompted the first-ever cuts to Arizona farmers’ water supply from the Colorado River.
The Bureau of Reclamation in August declared a water shortage at Lake Mead, one of the river’s primary reservoirs, after water levels fell to historic lows. More than one-third of Arizona’s water flows up the Colorado River to Lake Mead.
The government’s declaration triggered Tier 1 water reductions, which slashed the state’s river water supply by nearly 20%, or 512,000 acre-feet. One acre-foot of water supplies about two households each year.
Arizona farmers use nearly three-quarters of the available water supply to irrigate their crops.
“The American West is a canary in the coal mine for climate change,” Campbell said, in a meeting at Phoenix City Hall. “These problems will start happening in other places too.”
