Geez Louise, Kyle, are you going to run him off the team if he makes a mistake? How many times have you deprived him of supper because he missed a FT?
My first encounter with the coach who might not be at Washington State much longer: I am hanging with Mark Few and Randy Bennett and this young dude wanders over to sit with us. I guess he figures I have 1 less brain, Mark and Randy are WCC coaches (Mark had just been hired as head coach at Gonzaga that Spring, Randy was an assistant at Pepperdine) and Kyle was an assistant at USD which is in the WCC and he seemed younger than he was and I am child-like so that made it okay.
But Mark and Randy seemed confused about why Kyle was sitting there, listening to everything we were talking about.
Then he decided to give his views and he was immediately elected to the club (no, I didn't have a vote). Randy hired him 2 years later.
First coach at WSU to finish .500 or over his first 2 seasons since Tony Bennett. Actually, until Tony Bennett did it no else at WSU had ever done that. First coach to win 20 games per season 3 times in a row at San Francisco since a guy had Bill Russell on his roster and the only coach to finish over .500 2 years in a row at Columbia.
Yup, Columbia Basketball always stinks.
UCLA, fortunately, doesn't play at the Palouse this season.
UCLA plays UDub in Seattle, but escapes a road game at WSU.
Whew.

WSU just gave Smith a contract extension.
One day after Washington State extended women’s basketball coach Kamie Ethridge’s contract through the 2026-27 season, the school announced men’s basketball coach Kyle Smith also would stay in Pullman through the same year.
The third-year head coach agreed to a contract extension through the 2026-27 campaign, it was announced Thursday. Smith’s original six-year contract ran through 2024-25.
“The rebirth in our men’s basketball program since Kyle arrived two years ago has been remarkable,” Washington State athletic director Pat Chun said in a news release. “Kyle’s ability to attract and develop top talent has revitalized not only our men’s basketball program, but our fan base as well.
“The future of Cougar basketball is in good hands under Kyle’s leadership and we are excited he will be a Cougar for many years to come.”
Smith’s unique basketball philosophy that focuses on defense, analytics and intangibles has been a hit with fans, national media and, most importantly, the win column.
In his first year with the Cougs in 2019, Smith led WSU to its first .500-or-better season since 2011-12. He’s the first WSU coach to finish at .500 or better in his first two seasons since Tony Bennett, owner of a national championship with Virginia, was in Pullman.
