Next are Oregon State Beavers who tied for 6th place and then went on to shock the college basketball world. If you could have bet a 6-game parlay on the Beavers starting with the Pac-12 tournament, you could have made a lot of money. No sane person would have made that bet. Since when are sports bettors sane?
GRADUATING
Zach is done playing college basketball.
IN THE DRAFT
Ethan Thompson didn't get drafted and is playing in the Summer League along with former Beaver Tres Tinkle.
TRANSFERRING OUT
Alfred Hollins left the team 3 games into the season. He still hasn't found a new home.
Franklin took a redshirt year in 2019-20, then played in 20 games this past season. Playing only 6 minutes a game, he was barely noticed. He will barely be missed.
Tariq Silver was a JUCO transfer who never got much PT.
None of these look like a big loss for the Beavers.
RETURNING
As expected Warish Alatishe and Roman Silva pulled out of the draft and returned to Oregon State.
Most conferences don't have one Silva. Stanford got a Silva, Oregon State kept theirs, and now the Pac-12 has two of them.
Here's an unusual stat for last season. All five of Oregon State's leading scorers played in every game. No one missed a game due to injury or COVID.
The rest of the roster played in almost every game too. I suspect the games they didn't play were due to the coach's decision. Tinkle seems to have had his entire roster of 9 players available for every game. I don't think any other team in the Pac-12 can say that.
With the departure of Ethan Thompson and Zach Reichle, I see a bunch of decent payers but not enough talent for another tournament bid. Lucas will be great. Alatishe is insanely athletic and a beast on the boards. After that I see a solid roster, but not a great one.
Their season really hinges on Jarod Lucas. The Beavers have been leaning on a few stars every season in the Tinkle era, primarily Tres Tinkle and the Thompson brothers.
BTW, the Thompson Brothers are not related to the British Pop Group "The Thompson Twins", who had no members named Thompson and no twins in their lineup of 3 to 7 members.
Just a reminder: Rodrigue tha Andela is not related to any of these:
Meaghan Thee Stallion
Jorah the Andal
Smokey the Bear
Andre the Giant
Billy the Kid
Ivan the Terrible
Alexander the Great
Ming the Merciless
None of these transfers are ranked among the top 85 transfers by CBS.
They get back most of the essential pieces of last year's team. However, they are losing the biggest piece, Ethan Thompson and glue guy Zach Reichel. Thompson led them in scoring, assists, and steals. Reichel was second on the team in assists.
Here's the question: Are they going to be the team that went on a 6-game winning streak and went to the Elite Eight?
Or are they going to be the team that finished 6th in the Pac-12, was lucky to get a first-round bye in the Pac-12 tournament, only got by UCLA because of a missed free throw, and lost games to Wyoming and Portland?
They had a few factors helping them last season. They all stayed healthy. Their roster stability was a big advantage, in a crazy year.
Also, they never had a game cancelled. This means that they likely didn't miss a practice.
A lot fell into place for their big run at the end of the season. I doubt they will be that lucky this season. If Tinkle gets this group back to the tournament, I will be convinced he really can coach. (I will also have to pay off a bet I made that they won't make the tournament.)
The predictions for Oregon State are all over the map. Less1Brain picks them third. Wilner picks 4th. I pick 5th. Vrooman says 8th, and Torvick goes for 10th. That averages out to 6th.
This team will go as far as Jarod Lucas can carry them. I don't think he can carry them back to the tournament. They might make the top half of the Pac-12.

I don't know how to take the USC offer. These days they seem to offer anyone and everyone. Taylor is from Compass Prep in Chandler Arizona. They look like they are becoming a power in college sports. UCLA commit Dylan Andrews is transferring there as well as Corona Centennial's Kylan Boswell who doesn't seem to like playing at the same high school two years in a row.

Xzavier Malone-Key's parents clearly wanted confuse everyone on how to pronounce their son's first name. Does he have a brother named "XZander"?
Ahmad Rand was the #13 JUCO when he got to Memphis for his one season when he played 3 games.
Damned Beavers! They bring in DaShawn Davis, who I was sure to mix up with Daejon Davis of Stanford. Damn you Deajon! Did you have to transfer to Washington? Didn't you read my earlier version of this? At least D'Shawn Schwartz of Colorado is transferring out of the league.
Chol Marial is a bit of an unknown. Marial struggled to find regular playing time at Maryland, in part due to injuries. He scored a career-high 7 points on November 25th in an 18-point victory over Old Dominion. He’s the cousin of NBA player Thon Maker and he possesses a 7’ 8” wingspan. He seems to have a pretty high upside.
Tre Williams gives the Beavers their second transfer from a Big Ten team. He played in 27 games for the Gophers. Williams started the final 13 games of the 2020-21 season, playing as many as 38 minutes in a March 6 game against Rutgers. Williams averaged 5.6 points and 2.5 rebounds last season, but his numbers were considerably better down the stretch. He scored in double figures in seven of Minnesota’s final nine games, with a season-high 17 at Penn State. Is a move from the Gophers to the Beavers a step up or a step down in either basketball or mascot? Beats me.
I don't expect much out of the other three. However, I didn't expect much out of Alitishe, Silva, or Andela either, and they all looked pretty good this season.
