Not interested in the noise pollution or looking up and seeing them everywhere. I'm pretty sure I don't want to be sitting on my back porch and seeing a trail of flying cars, let alone having them fly over my house. And, can you imagine going camping, and having the quiet and nice views spoiled by a bunch of flying cars? Everything you said is true about earthbound ICE cars as well. I think all of the companies mentioned are working on electric powered helicopter or drone style cars. One of them is Joby Aviation, from Santa Cruz, that has a lot of money from Toyota. My son knows people there. I'm not saying we should move to all-airborne commuting. And I agree with Andy that it only works in numbers if the cars are driverless. But it's much more than a chimerical idea. Just not really a car. More like a personal helicopter for the less than superrich. |

I don't know what an ICE car is. If you're saying the impact of flying personal helicopters for the less than superrich will be no different than cars, you are super wrong. I live in the midst of cities. I look out my back yard, and the only cars I see are on the toll road several miles away. And, the car noise is not directly over head and loud.
And, when we go camping, we can off the beaten path (well, we can get on very lightly used beaten paths) and be assured of peacefulness and quiet, and the illusion that we are alone in nature. If flying personal helicopters for the less than superrich become a thing, that is g.o.n.e. You can bet your sweet ass that if personal helicopters for the less than superrich becames a thing, I will join the hordes flying over beautiful natural scenery.

Remember, the FAA regulates everything that flies, even small recreational drones. Flying cars will definitely be regulated as such and have restricted flight paths.
Computer controlled (driverless) navigation will ensure those rules are obeyed.
We're still years away from practical products. And they won't be cheap, that's why there won't be a lot of them. I doubt you'll ever see one near your neighborhood or any of your favorite camping sites.

I don't see how that affects what I've said. We're still years away from practical products. And they won't be cheap, that's why there won't be a lot of them. The article says "As soon as 2030, consumers might be able to press a button and order an air taxi straight to their cloud-tethered office." That's a wild ass guess, I'm sure. It could be longer, it could be sooner. But, say it's 10 years from now. I don't want to see it then. I don't want my kids to live in that world. And, I'll add, I'm not a fan of airborne drone delivery. You buy a place out in the country, and several times a day you get drones flying over your property making deliveries? No thanks. |
