When I was in my early teens, my favorite author was Robert Heinlein. One of his early novels was The Day After Tomorrow, which was set in the US after we were conquered by China. A group of brave scientist rebels create a new weapon, a ray gun which can kill or stun Chinese, but has no effect on White People. It was the perfect weapon, at least if you weren't an Asian-American.
I think to some racists, COVID-19 is the perfect disease. In their mind, it is a disease that infects and kills minorities.(And a few old people, too, but who cares?)
"Data for about three-fourths of those deaths reveals that the mortality rate for blacks is 2.7 times higher than for whites. Although blacks make up only 13 percent of the population, they represent 30 percent of Covid-19 patients in the US."
In the minds of some of the crazier demonstrators, this is a black-person disease. Just as many people think that AIDS is a gay-person disease.
They haven't done the math that says if 30% of COVID patients are black, 70% are not. To them it is a disease that affects other people. "Those people. Not our people."
Ignorance is a dangerous thing.

I am starting to see that. Someone in an apolitical Facebook group posted a very post racist against China and Covid 19. In one of his replies when speaking about the disease he mentioned being thankful for his European heritage which I thought was strange. Now it makes sense.

True - and you didn't imply this, but racism is not a U.S. thing. It's pretty universal.

True - and you didn't imply this, but racism is not a U.S. thing. It's pretty universal. Almost every social ill is universal as is racism, but in varying degrees. We all live here in the US, so problems in the US are our immediate concerns. That they exist outside the US are no comfort.

But, there is a tendency to jump to "we're worse than everybody else." I'm glad we agree that we're like everybody else, and everybody else is like us.

I would like it if we were a little better. I don't demand that America be exceptional. I would hope for that, but I would settle for Top 10%.
