Thank You, Joe!
The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits last week came back down to more recent ranges after a big jump the week before due to hurricanes in the Southeast.
The Labor Department reported Thursday that applications for jobless claims fell by by 19,000 to 241,000 for the week of Oct. 12. That’s well below the 262,000 analysts were expecting.
Applications for jobless benefits are widely considered representative of U.S. layoffs in a given week.
Joe Says, "You're Welcome."
A student loan cancellation program for public workers has granted relief to more than 1 million Americans — up from just 7,000 who were approved before it was updated by the Biden administration two years ago.
President Joe Biden announced the milestone on Thursday, saying his administration restored a promise to America’s teachers, firefighters, nurses and other public servants. He celebrated it even as his broader student loan plans remain halted by courts following legal challenges by Republican-led states.
That brings the total amount of student debt relief under the administration to $175 billion for more than 4.8 million borrowers over the nearly four years President Joe Biden has been in office, the department said.

The Federal Trade Commission adopted a final rule Wednesday that will require businesses to make it easy for consumers to cancel unwanted subscriptions and memberships.
The “click-to-cancel” rule will prohibit retailers and other businesses from misleading people about subscriptions and require them to obtain consumers’ consent before charging for memberships, auto-renewals and programs linked to free trial offers.
The FTC said businesses must also disclose when free trials or other promotional offers will end and let customers end recurring subscriptions as easily as they started them. Most of the provisions take effect effect 180 days after the rule is published in the Federal Register, the agency said.

Switzerland and Viagra-Laced Honey. Could It Get Any Stranger? The search for former President Donald Trump's "Swiss-made" watch origins led investigative reporters to a retailer of "Male Enhancement" honey, laced with Viagra, whose spokesperson was instructed to keep his mouth shut until after Election Day. CNN's investigation into the $100,000 Trump watch did not lead to Switzerland, but a Wyoming shopping center home to dozens of anonymous businesses, among them TheBestWatchesOnEarth LLC and the Royal Honey Shop, which refers to itself on X as The Best Honey On Earth LLC. "A spokesperson for the honey seller, Vladimir Dmitriev, called it 'a highly reputable company,' but declined to respond to a list of questions," CNN reported. CNN tried to find the makers of Trump’s new ‘Swiss-made’ watches. We ended up at a shopping center in WyomingFor $100K, You Should Get a Lifetime Supply of Viagra Thrown In.

Think Climate Change Isn't Going to Affect You? If You Eat Food, Think Again.
The world has a worsening water crisis and half of all food production will be at risk of failure by the middle of this century.
That’s the worrying message from a report released Wednesday by a major international study.
Half of the world’s population already faces water scarcity and that proportion is growing too, according to the Global Commission on the Economics of Water, which is funded by the Dutch government and facilitated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation — a group of the world’s richest economies.
While water scarcity will have a seismic effect on humans and the environment, it will also have an economic impact too. The GCEW estimates that a lack of clean water due to climate change and the chronic mismanagement of land could cut global economic growth by 8% on average, with the loss almost double that in lower-income countries.

For All the Hand-Wringing Over Young Black Males, ....
Vice President Kamala Harris still has a wide lead over former President Donald Trump among Black voters in battleground states, according to a new poll, which shows a key slice of undecided Black voters still poised to make a decision about the presidential election.
The findings, from a Howard University Initiative on Public Opinion poll of 981 likely Black voters in battleground states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — show that 84% of likely Black voters will support Harris in November and 8% say they’ll support Trump. Another 8% are undecided.

Young, Second-Generation Hispanics Don't Watch Univision Much, So They Didn't See the Senile Sociopathic Evade Questions.Donald Trump participated in a town hall with voters hosted by Univision on Wednesday night, and the event was a showcase of the headwinds Trump faces when he ventures outside of his right-wing bubble. During the 2024 campaign, Trump has rarely faced questions from those who aren’t already supporters, and he has largely avoided media outlets that do not have a conservative bias. The voters who spoke to Trump at the Univision event respectfully questioned Trump on important issues, but he often veered off into unrelated ranting or avoiding the subject. Ramiro González, a former registered Republican, told Trump he was disillusioned by the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and Trump’s role in inciting the attack. He asked Trump to win back his vote by explaining his behavior during the attack and his mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic. Trump restated his claim that he did nothing wrong on the day of the attack, despite his speech that day telling supporters to “fight like hell.” Trump also lied and said there were no guns at the attack, but there were. “That was a day of love,” Trump said, as González looked on skeptically. Do They Look Happy With His Answers?\

It's Not People Eating Dogs. It's Dogs Eating People.
Bodies strewn across dusty streets, entire roads destroyed by Israeli strikes, people starving. This is the picture painted of Jabalya, northern Gaza, by the emergency services chief in the area.
“You can see the signs of hunger on the people in northern Gaza,” Fares Afana, the head of emergency services in northern Gaza, told CNN by phone on Monday. “Israeli forces are destroying everything that represents life or signs of life.”
Afana told CNN that he and his colleagues have received the bodies of Palestinians killed in northern Gaza, with some showing signs of scavenging by animals, which has stifled efforts to identify the deceased.
“Stray dogs who are hungry are eating these bodies in the street… It makes it difficult for us to identify the bodies,” he said.
He shared a photo with CNN showing the remains of a young boy whose body he said was fed on by stray dogs.

Money, Money, Money, Money
Vice President Kamala Harris, who raised a stunning $1 billion in three months, has fueled a fundraising revolution this cycle that is changing the game for down-ballot Democrats and deeply troubling GOP leaders. House Democrats are so flush with cash that they are seriously competing on red-tinted turf in places like Iowa and Wisconsin that were trending away from the party just a few years ago.
The Democrats’ inroads in the Midwest are on top of the dozen-plus GOP-held seats in New York and California that were already the epicenter of the battle of House control. Democrats’ huge summertime war chests have expanded that battlefield as party leaders seek every possible path to victory. Republicans have had to buckle down on defense, keeping them from truly competing in once-feasible places like southwestern Connecticut, the Nevada suburbs and southeastern Pennsylvania.
“When excitement and energy happens, then the money follows,” said Christina Bohannan, the Democrat running in the neighboring Iowa district who has shattered fundraising records in her increasingly competitive rematch against GOP Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks. Bohannan not only outraised Miller-Meeks in the last quarter, but outspent the GOP incumbent by almost a 3-to-1 margin. And Democrats are planning to spend even more there in the final weeks.

The Senile Sociopath Still Couldn't Voter in Nebraska
The block was lifted by the Nebraska Supreme Court, which ordered state officials to immediately comply with two related laws—one from 2005, and another passed this spring—that allow people to regain voting rights after completing their felony sentences. The court’s ruling on Wednesday reversed the actions of Nebraska’s Republican secretary of state, Bob Evnen, and attorney general, Mike Hilgers, who together in July abruptly declared both laws unconstitutional and blocked Nebraskans with past felony convictions from voting.
The court’s decision means that nearly 100,000 Nebraskans who’d already regained voting rights over the last two decades because of the 2005 reform law, only to see their rights thrown into question this summer, are once again unambiguously eligible to cast a ballot. It also allows approximately 7,000 Nebraskans who were enfranchised by the law adopted this year to finally register to vote. [...]
Voting rights advocates celebrated the court’s decision but they remain outraged at Evnen and Hilgers for the confusion and delays they created. The timing of the court’s decision gives advocates little opportunity to help people who might be confused about their voting rights because of Evnen and Hilgers: It came just two days before the Oct. 18 deadline to register to vote online. The cutoff for people to register in person is next week, Oct. 25.

The Lies Aren't Just Hurting Minorities
There were some tense moments on Saturday when volunteers say they witnessed an armed group of people on side-by-sides confronting and threatening FEMA workers in the Elk Mills Tennessee community of Carter County.
Tracy Elder is president and founder of the International Alliance of Community Chaplains. Her group has been working in disaster relief for more than 20 years.
They are in Carter County at the request of the Elk Mills Volunteer Fire Department to help run the command center there, providing supplies and resources for those in need. Elder told News Channel 11 that she found herself between FEMA workers and a group of armed citizens criticizing the work of the government agency. Elder was able to diffuse the situation. [...]
Because of the bridges washed out in the community, the area is now a now a much longer drive from the sheriff’s department in Elizabethton, accessible only through Johnson County, or North Carolina. That doesn’t sit well with Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley and that’s why he’s working to get a sub-station up and running at the site of the now, washed-away fire department. There two deputies will be stationed 24 hours a day where they’ll work and sleep.

Here's Hoping He Lives Long Enough to See Her Inaugured
It has been reported by the Carter family that Jimmy Carter’s 2024 ballot was deposited into the dropbox in front of the Sumter county courthouse in Plains, Georgia this morning. According to Georgia law his vote will be counted even if he leaves this world between now and November 5.
It was President Carter’s expressed desired that he would be able to vote one more time and that he would he would be able to vote for Kamala Harris for president. It makes me happy to know that President Carter was able to make good on his vow.

Who's Your Daddy?
Former President Donald Trump sat down with Fox News' Harris Faulkner on Tuesday night in front of an all-female audience in Cummings, Georgia, where he addressed several issues aimed at appealing to women voters including the child tax credit, the economy and reproductive rights -- calling himself the "father of IVF."
