Are AI's That Smart or Are People That Dumb?
Artificial intelligence can detect breast cancer in mammograms as effectively as experienced radiologists, according to a new study that some experts are calling a game changer for the field of oncology. The emerging technology could cut radiologists’ workload by about half, freeing them for more advanced diagnostic work, the study found.
The preliminary analysis of a long-term trial of 80,000 women in Sweden, published Tuesday in the journal Lancet Oncology, showed that AI readings of mammograms actually detected 20 percent more cases of breast cancer than the “standard” reading by two radiologists. The AI assessments were verified by one or two radiologists, depending on the patient’s risk profile.
This led the researchers to conclude that using AI in mammography screening is a “safe” way to help cut patient waiting times and reduce the pressure on radiologists amid a global workforce shortage.
It may be a while before mammograms will be read by a machine — as the authors and other experts have warned that AI models need to be trained and tested more before they can be deployed in health-care settings.
Still, the findings are “breathtaking,” wrote Nereo Segnan and Antonio Ponti, experts affiliated with the Center for Epidemiology and Cancer Prevention in Turin, Italy, who were not involved in the analysis.

Here's a Bright IdeaGet ready to say goodbye to the once ubiquitous incandescent light bulb, pioneered by Thomas Edison more than a century ago. You can thank — or blame — new federal energy efficiency regulations that went into full effect Tuesday. Quite possibly without you even noticing. The Energy Department rules, which date back to the Obama administration, have been whipsawed in the political process for years. Some conservatives and Republican lawmakers long denounced them for interfering with consumer choice and placing undue burdens on business. Under former President Donald Trump, the Energy Department scrapped them in 2019; the Biden administration subsequently revived them. Yet by the time Aug. 1 rolled around, the critics had gone quiet, possibly because companies and consumers have already started voting for better lighting efficiency with their wallets. Here's what you need to know. WHAT CHANGES UNDER THE NEW RULES? The rules establish strict new efficiency standards for bulbs used in homes and businesses and bans the manufacture and sale of those that don't meet those requirements. Practical incandescent bulbs, which trace their origin to an 1880 Edison patent, can't meet those standards. Neither can halogen bulbs. The rules also ban imports of less efficient bulbs. But those requirements carry a bit less heft than they would have several years back, largely because advances in LED technology and manufacturing have dramatically lowered prices and improved quality. LED stands for “light emitting diode,” a semiconductor device that converts electricity directly into light. Between 2015 and 2020, for instance, the percentage of American households that reported using LED bulbs for most or all of their lighting jumped more than tenfold — from 4% to 47%, according to the Energy Information Administration, an independent federal statistics agency.

Leprosy cases are surging in Florida
I'm not sure I'd call 15 cases a surge but it is a mystery.
There have been 15 cases of leprosy in Florida this year, the majority of which were in Brevard County, according to NBC affiliate WESH.

Get ready to say goodbye to the once ubiquitous incandescent light bulb
There was a very simple solution to the less efficient incandescent bulbs that did not require buying more expensive LED bulbs. I'm guessing the lighting industry squelched its promotion in order to sell higher priced LED bulbs.
At my home in GA I installed rheostats or dimmer switches on all of my light switches. All of my lights there are incandescent bulbs and I have not replaced a single bulb in 20 years. Burning a bulb at maximum intensity is rarely necessary.
