Looks Dangerous to Me. Imagine If a Black Person Were Carrying It.Monmouth University lifted a shelter-in-place order after an investigation into a "possible armed subject" found that a curling iron "was mistaken for a weapon," a university official said. Police at Monmouth, in West Long Branch, New Jersey, had received a report at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday of a "possible armed subject" on campus, the school said in an alert posted to its website. Multiple local and county law enforcement agencies searched and secured the campus, the university said. "Detectives were able to utilize video footage and other technology based on the description provided and identified a person of interest, a currently enrolled student," Patrick F. Leahy, the president, said in a letter posted early Thursday. He added, "Based on interviews with that person, law enforcement personnel were able to determine that the person was in possession of a curling iron that was mistaken for a weapon." The university issued an all-clear notification a short time later. "All clear-the shelter in place on campus has been lifted, the campus is safe, an elevated police presence remains," school officials said on Twitter early Thursday. "Additional information will be sent via email." All classes before noon on Thursday have been canceled, the school said. Todays' Crypto Firm in Trouble
Shares of Coinbase tumbled 15% Thursday after the cryptocurrency trading platform received a warning from the Securities and Exchange Commission that it could face securities charges.
The cryptocurrency trading platform said in an SEC filing late Wednesday that it had received a Wells Notice from the agency, which indicates that regulators believe laws protecting investors were violated.
Among the practices being targeted by the SEC is “staking,” which is “Coinbase Earn” by the company.
Users of trading platforms can stake their cryptocurrency, essentially locking up some of their assets, in exchange for payment later, much like earning interest rates in a savings account. Those assets are used by platforms like Coinbase Global Inc. to guarantee other transactions taking place on the blockchain.
The SEC says Coinbase and other platforms must register as a securities platform to offer such services, and only after it is approved by the SEC's Division of Corporation Finance.
A Wells Notice for Coinbase is another warning shot from SEC Chair Gary Gensler who is attempting to establish the agency's oversight of crypto firms when they wander into areas typically associated with banking.
Kraken, a rival crypto exchange platform, agreed to settle in February for $30 million and to stop offering staking as a service.

Xi Leaves With a Giant "Fuck You" to Putin
China's President Xi Jinping has called a meeting of ex-Soviet Central Asian countries, in an audacious power play in Russia's back yard the week of his summit with Russia's President Vladimir Putin.
Xi invited the leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to the first China-Central Asia summit Wednesday, the AFP news agency reported.
(It remains unclear if the reclusive state of Turkmenistan has been invited.)
The states are all former members of the Soviet Union, and Moscow has long regarded them as being in its sphere of influence after the then Russian Empire conquered them in the 19th century.

The move came as Xi was visiting Putin in Moscow as part of a 3-day-summit which concluded Wednesday, in which the nations pledged to deepen and extend their cooperation, and Xi signaled continued Chinese backing for Russia in its invasion of Ukraine.
Analysts say that China has secured significant leverage over Russia in return for its diplomatic and economic support, and that in calling the meeting of Central Asian nations it is seeking to exploit that advantage.
