I wondered why the baseball kept getting bigger. Then it hit me.
Is It True Canadians Have Less Fun?
Canadians appear to be losing their taste for alcohol, according to findings in a new report that showed beer and wine sales at historic lows.
From 2021-22, volume of beer sold per person in Canada slumped drastically. The volume in wine sales slid by its largest margin since 1949.
Stricter drinking guidelines and a new alcohol tax on the horizon send signals that further change is brewing.
Despite the trend, beer remains the country's go-to inebriant.
The report, released by Statistics Canada, a government data cruncher, found that sales of alcohol slid for first time in a decade, by 1.2%. Wine sales decreased by 4%, the largest decrease ever recorded by Statistics Canada.
Beer's time as the top alcoholic beverage by sales has shown signs of going flat, according to the report. Over the last 10 years, beer has continued to lose market share, totalling an 8.8% drop.
Meanwhile, ciders and wine coolers, also known as alcopops, have claimed the majority of that lost market share, increasing by 5%, the highest rise in market share among all alcoholic beverage categories. Their total value in sales were up by 13.5% from 2021-22 compared to the previous year.
Although overall alcohol sales based on volume decreased, total sales were up 2.4% because of rising costs driven by inflation. For the fiscal year ending in March 2022, liquor stores and other outlets still managed to sell $26.1bn (£21.69bn) in booze.

I Guess Previous Guy Has a Hard Time Understanding the Concept of Telling the Truth Under Oath
Former President Donald Trump has lashed out at Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch, accusing him of betraying Fox hosts in recent legal testimony.
In a defamation lawsuit, Mr Murdoch conceded some Fox hosts had "endorsed" baseless claims the 2020 presidential election was stolen by voter fraud.
On social media, Mr Trump accused the media mogul of selling out his stars.
Dominion Voting Systems argues Fox News aired false and malicious rumours about voter fraud that harmed its business.
In its defamation lawsuit, the electronic voting company is suing the conservative outlet for $1.6bn (£1.3bn).
On Tuesday, Mr Trump posted: "Why is Rupert Murdoch throwing his anchors under the table, which also happens to be killing his case and infuriating his viewers, who will again be leaving in droves - they already are."
Previous Guy Has a Hard Time Telling the Truth, Period.
Murdoch Acknowledges Fox News Hosts Endorsed Election Fraud Falsehoods
Rupert Murdoch, the conservative media mogul, spoke under oath last month in a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox by Dominion Voting Systems.
Asked by Dominion’s lawyer, Justin Nelson, whether he could have ordered Fox News to keep Trump lawyers like Ms. Powell and Mr. Giuliani off the air, Mr. Murdoch responded: “I could have. But I didn’t.”
The document also described how Paul D. Ryan, a former Republican speaker of the House and current member of the Fox Corporation board of directors, said in his deposition that he had implored Mr. Murdoch and his son Lachlan, the chief executive officer, “that Fox News should not be spreading conspiracy theories.” Mr. Ryan suggested instead that the network pivot and “move on from Donald Trump and stop spouting election lies.”

Why So Many Russian UFO Sightings?
“UFOs” have rained on Russia in recent days – some dangerously close to the capital Moscow and President Vladimir Putin’s hometown.
Russian officials and media, using that term – “unidentified foreign objects” – seem unnerved and are accusing Ukraine of drone attacks.
Ukraine on Wednesday denied targeting Russia, suggesting attempts at domestic assaults – which Moscow did not accept.
With a dash of black humour, presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak tweeted that a sense of “panic and collapse” was growing in Russia, “manifested by increasing domestic attacks of unidentified flying objects on infrastructure sites”.

Has the QOP Found a Way To Win Every Election?
A Republican in Florida's state Legislature has filed a bill that, if enacted, would eliminate the Florida Democratic Party.
“The Ultimate Cancel Act,” filed on Tuesday by state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, would require the state’s Division of Elections to “immediately cancel” the filings of any political party whose platform had “previously advocated for, or been in support of, slavery or involuntary servitude.”
The bill, called S.B. 1248, would require Florida officials to notify all registered voters who belong to any canceled parties that their party no longer exists. It would also change their voter registration to “no party affiliation” and “provide procedures” for those voters to update their affiliation to “an active political party.”
The bill would allow any canceled political parties to re-register with the Florida Department of State — but only under the condition that the party change its name to something “substantially different from the name of any other party previously registered” with the agency.
The proposed legislation doesn’t explicitly mention the Democratic Party. But the party, throughout much of the early and mid-1800’s, supported slavery. Southern Democrats in particular supported protecting slavery in the U.S. and opposed civil rights reforms for decades following the Civil War. The party, of course, underwent a major realignment in the 19th century, and support for such policies has been absent from its platform or general discourse for many years.

Bipartisan Action on Making Trains Safer? You Have Entered Another Dimension. A Dimension Not Only of Sight and Sound But Of Mind ... At the Signpost Up Head ...
A bipartisan group of senators will introduce legislation Wednesday aimed at preventing rail disasters after the devastating derailment in East Palestine last month.
The Railway Safety Act of 2023 would create more stringent safety requirements for trains carrying hazardous materials and increase the frequency of rail car inspections. It would also require trained, two-person crews to work aboard every train carrying hazardous materials and levy heightened fines for rail carriers' wrongdoing.

It's My Mummy and I'll Carry It If I Want ToA mummified corpse up to 800 years old was found in a food delivery bag in Peru, authorities in the South American country have said. Photos released by the Directorate of Culture in the southeastern city of Puno show a skeleton in the fetal position, lying in a red bag with a reflective inner lining, commonly used by food delivery companies. It bears the logo of Pedidos Ya, a Uruguayan takeout company popular across South America. The directorate said in a statement Sunday that the body of “an adult mummified male individual,” with a “relative chronology of 600 to 800 years old,” was discovered during a joint operation with the Peru National Police. The body has become a property of the state under national heritage laws. Local media company Noticias Sin Filtro Puno TV published an interview with Julio Cesar, who said the body belonged to him. “It sleeps in my bedroom, with me. There’s my bed, the TV set and next to it, there’s Juanita. I take care of it. It’s like, if you’ll pardon the expression, as if it were my spiritual girlfriend.” he told the media outlet, using the name he has for the body. Scans later found that the body is, in fact, that of a male, a Juan, not a Juanita.

Why Hasn't Biden's Dead Son Been Indicted?
House Oversight Chair James Comer wants to know why United States Attorney for the District of Delaware David Weiss hasn’t indicted President Joe Biden’s son. Actually, make that sons.
While Comer, like most Republicans, is absolutely panting to see Hunter Biden indicted on the kinds of charges that members of Congress don’t usually concern themselves with when they involve people who are in no way members of the government, The Daily Beast reports that Comer went further in a recent appearance on Lou Dobbs' podcast. In that interview, Comer complained that Weiss, a Trump appointee, hadn’t previously indicted Beau Biden, the president’s older son who died of brain cancer in 2015.
“This U.S. attorney had had an opportunity to go after the Bidens years ago,” Comer said. “In fact, it was Beau Biden, the president’s other son, that was involved in some campaign donations from a person that got indicted, as well as Joe Biden was involved in some of these campaign donations when he was a senator, and then when he ran for president against Obama.”
Comer added: “But nothing ever happened. So I don’t know much about this U.S. attorney other than he’s had an opportunity to investigate the Bidens before and he chose not to. We all know that he’s just been silent for a long time.”
Comer was referring to illegal campaign contributions for which no public figure was charged—because a two-year investigation concluded they did not know the contributions were illegal. Christopher Tigani, the person who made the illegal contributions by using straw donors and reimbursing them, pleaded guilty to federal charges in 2011 after wearing a wire for the FBI to try to get evidence implicating people close to Joe Biden and failing to get usable evidence.

When Dominion Is Done Eating the Meat Off of Fox Noise, the Vultures Will Come
The Fox Corporation board has a huge mess on its hands — and it needs to work quickly to clean it up.
That's according to Jeffrey A. Sonnenfeld, the renowned professor and senior associate dean for leadership studies at the Yale School of Management. Sonnenfeld told me on Tuesday that the dramatic revelations brought to light by Dominion Voting Systems' $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News — showing it knowingly peddled election lies to its audience — are cause for serious concern that could threaten the parent company.
The filings, he said, showed members of the Fox Corp. board had failed to act to prevent misconduct by Fox executives, and warned the disclosures will result in "likely" shareholder lawsuits, a possible SEC investigation into "deceptive practices of the board for conspiring to conceal known misconduct with material adverse impact," and the potential loss of insurance protection for the company's directors and officers.
Sonnenfeld, who has advised hundreds of CEOs and recent U.S. presidents, said the board should take immediate action, including the removal of high-ranking personnel, such as Fox News chief executive Suzanne Scott, from their roles.
"The board has a duty to remove such officials for proven misconduct," Sonnenfeld told me by email, explaining that peddling known election lies — as "acknowledged in the company's own sworn testimony" — damaged the outlet's corporate reputation.

We Don't Need No Education. We Just Need Some Thought Control.
Ron DeSantis shows how not to run an education system
The Florida governor seems to view schools as the battleground for his war on inclusivity and truth. Whether it is Desantis’s “don’t say gay” law or his vendetta against African American and gender studies, his obsession with telling teachers what they cannot teach far outweighs his concern for how students are performing.
And as it turns out, that performance is pretty lousy.
While Florida officials — including DeSantis — have boasted about the state’s relatively high proficiency scores among fourth-graders, they have largely ignored how quickly those scores drop as students grow older. As education journalist Billy Townsend writes in an opinion piece for the Tampa Bay Times, “No other state comes close to Florida’s level of consistent fourth to eighth grade performance collapse.”

Poor People With Diabetes Will Only Have to Decide Between Food and Medicine for Another Seven Months
Eli Lilly will cut prices for some older insulins later this year and immediately expand a cap on costs insured patients pay to fill prescriptions.
The moves announced Wednesday promise critical relief to some people with diabetes who can face annual costs of more than $1,000 for insulin they need in order to live. Lilly’s changes also come as lawmakers and patient advocates pressure drugmakers to do something about soaring prices.
Lilly said it will cut the list price for its most commonly prescribed insulin, Humalog, and for another insulin, Humulin, by 70% in the fourth quarter, which starts in October. The drugmaker didn’t detail what the new prices would be.
List prices are what a drugmaker initially sets for a product and what people who have no insurance or plans with high deductibles are sometimes stuck paying.
Patient advocates have long called for insulin price cuts to help uninsured people who would not be affected by price caps tied to insurance coverage.
