The Definition of Insanity Specifically what in the article did you think was insane? I was thinking of the Russians throwing more poorly-trained, poorly-equiped men into the meat grinder. It's hard for me to believe their new offensive will accomplish much. I could have been clearer.

Well that's been their strategy just to inflict a few more casualties on the other side. Not sure it's insane since they plan it that way knowing the results and don't care.

There are two elements of their stategy that totally ignore military history: 1) Mass wave assaults against well-armed, entrenched enemy positions. (Fredricksberg in the Civil War and most of World War I, for just a couple of examples.) 2) Mass bombing of civilians in an attempt to destory their will to fight. (It didn't work for Hitler against London in the Blitz or for the Allies against Germany. Destorying industrial targets worked, but German civilian support for the war remained strong.)
If not insane, it is cruel and stupid.
