Maybe Russia Doesn't Count Draftees
Ukraine says around 400 Russian soldiers have died in a missile attack on the occupied Donetsk region.
Russian officials contested the figure, saying only 63 of their troops were killed. Neither claim has been verified, and access to the Russian-controlled site is restricted.
The attack on New Year's Day hit a building in the city of Makiivka, where Russian forces were stationed.
It is extremely rare for Moscow to confirm any battlefield casualties.
But this was such a deadly attack, says the BBC's Russia editor Steve Rosenberg, that staying silent most probably wasn't an option.
In a statement on Monday, Russia's defence ministry said Ukrainian forces fired six rockets using the US-made Himars rocket system at a building housing Russian troops. Two of them were shot down, it added.

I Suppose There are Worse Ways to Be Stuck on a Cruise Ship, as Long as they Don't Run Out of Booze and the Growth Stays on the Hull
Hundreds of passengers have been stranded on a cruise ship off the Australian coast after a potentially harmful growth was found on its hull.
The Viking Orion was denied permission to dock in Adelaide after authorities discovered "biofoul" - an accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae or small animals.
This can allow invasive species to be imported into non-native habitats.
Officials said the ship's hull must be cleaned before entering Australia.

It's a Slow News Day, So ...
In 2009, Sultan Kösen became the first man over 8 ft to be measured by Guinness World Records for more than 20 years.
In fact, Guinness World Records only knows of ten confirmed or reliable cases in history reaching 8 ft or more.
The part-time farmer from Turkey was found to be a towering 246.5 cm (8 ft 1 in) in height and he took the iconic title of Tallest living man.
Two years later, the 26-year-old was measured again in Ankara, Turkey, by which time he had grown to a staggering 251 cm (8 ft 2.8 in).

Apparently Two Can Play This Game
A Ukrainian drone attack damaged an electricity facility in the southwest of Russia's Bryansk region, bordering Ukraine, cutting power for several hours, the regional governor said on Monday.
"A Ukrainian drone attack was carried out this morning on the Klimovsky district," Alexander Bogomaz said on Telegram. "As a result of the strike, a power supply facility was damaged."
Around 12 hours later, Bogomaz said the power supply in the district had been fully restored.

I'll Drink to This
Adults who aren't sufficiently hydrated may age faster, face a higher risk of chronic diseases and be more likely to die younger than those who stay well-hydrated, according to a new study from the National Institutes of Health.
The results, published Monday, are based on data collected over 25 years from more than 11,000 adults in the U.S. The participants attended their first medical visits at ages 45 to 66, then returned for follow-ups through at ages 70 to 90.
The researchers looked at levels of sodium in the participants' blood as a proxy for hydration, because higher concentrations are a sign that they most likely weren't consuming enough fluids. The researchers found that the participants with high blood-sodium levels aged faster physiologically than those with lower levels, which was reflected in health markers associated with aging, like high blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.
The study participants all had blood-sodium concentrations considered to be within the normal range: 135 to 146 millimoles per liter. But the findings suggested that people with levels at the higher end of that normal range — above 144 millimoles per liter — were 50% more likely to show signs of physical aging beyond what would be expected for their years compared to people with lower blood-sodium levels. They also had a roughly 20% increased risk of premature death.
Even people with blood-sodium levels above 142 millimoles per liter had elevated risks of developing certain chronic diseases, including heart failure, stroke, chronic lung disease, diabetes and dementia, the study found.

What Else Will Kevin Agree To? Impeaching Hunter Biden Every Month?
McCarthy is running for Speaker of the House after a majority of House Republicans previously voted for him as the party’s Speaker candidate, and assuming that no Democrat votes for him on Tuesday, he can only afford to lose four GOP votes in order to be elected.
McCarthy agreed on a conference call Sunday to make it easier for lawmakers to potentially oust him in the future, Politico and CNN report, granting a demand from his opponents that just five lawmakers from the majority party can force a no-confidence vote for the Speaker.
The House GOP released a rules package on Sunday—which isn’t finalized yet—that also contains other rules that further-right lawmakers have pushed for, CNN reports, like creating a new committee to investigate the Biden Administration’s purported “weaponization” of the Justice Department and FBI.
The proposed rules would also allow the House Ethics Committee to take ethics complaints from the public, kill congressional staffers’ unionization efforts and outlaw remote hearings, among other measures, according to CNN.
Those concessions still might not be enough: Nine GOP lawmakers released a letter after the conference call Sunday saying that while McCarthy’s entreaties toward them are “welcome” and the “progress made thus far has been helpful,” it still isn’t enough to address their concerns.
Some lawmakers plan to vote against McCarthy even if he gives into all of lawmakers’ demands, Politico reported Monday, such as Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who’s one of five “Never Kevin” lawmakers who have already come out against McCarthy.
