Now You Can Have Your Bags Lost by Executives
Australian airline Qantas has asked senior executives to work as baggage handlers for three months as it tries to tackle an acute labour shortage.
The firm's head of operations is looking for at least 100 volunteers to work at Sydney and Melbourne airports.
Tasks include loading and unloading bags as well as driving vehicles to move luggage around airports.
The managers and executives were asked to work in the baggage handling roles for three or five days a week, in shifts of either four or six hours a day.

No Chips, No Missiles
Russia's military could be unable to operate the high-tech weapons and communications systems it has been using in Ukraine if the West were to tighten export controls, says a report.
Almost all Moscow's modern military systems depend on western-made microelectronics, says the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) report.
Moscow has found ways to bypass sanctions and export controls.
If the loopholes are closed, Russia's military might be permanently degraded.
Researchers for Rusi, a UK think tank, spent months in Ukraine, examining 27 of Russia's most modern military systems, either captured, brought down or abandoned by Russian troops.
They discovered at least 450 different kinds of unique, foreign-made components, most built in the US but also in other Western countries.
Products from familiar brands, like Sony and Texas Instruments, are turning up on the battlefield in Russian weapons systems. There is no suggestion those firms have been complicit in sending components to Russia.

So Why Does It Seem Like Baseball Games Are Getting Longer? If you feel like there’s less time in the day, you’re correct. Scientists recorded the shortest day on Earth since the invention of the atomic clock. Our planet’s rotation measured in at 1.59 milliseconds short of the normal 24-hour day on June 29, according to the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service, an organization in charge of global timekeeping. A rotation is the length of time the Earth takes to spin once on its axis, which is roughly 86,400 seconds. The previous record was documented on July 19, 2020, when the day measured 1.47 milliseconds shorter than normal. The atomic clock is a standardized unit of measurement that has been used since the 1950s to tell time and measure the Earth’s rotation, said Dennis McCarthy, retired director of time at the US Naval Observatory. Despite June 29 breaking a record for the shortest day in modern history, there have been much shorter days on Earth, he said. When dinosaurs still roamed the planet 70 million years ago, a single day on Earth lasted about 23 1/2 hours, according to a 2020 study published in Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology. Since 1820, scientists documented Earth’s rotation slowing down, according to NASA. In the past few years, it began speeding up, McCarthy said. Earth broke the record for the shortest day since atomic clocks were invented

All We Are Saying Is Give Peace a Chance
A ceasefire between Israel and the Islamic Jihad militant group in Gaza was holding on Monday after a weekend of hostilities left dozens of Palestinians dead.
The truce, announced on Sunday evening by both sides, came about 50 hours after the escalation began, when Israel launched what it called preemptive strikes on targets of the Islamic Jihad militant group in Gaza.
At least 44 Palestinians, including 15 children and some militants, were killed in the violence, according to information from Palestinian officials.
The escalation was the most serious in nearly 15 months, when the Israeli military and Hamas fought an 11-day war in May 2021. A key difference this time was the decision by Hamas to stay out of the fighting. Its statements blamed Israel for the escalation but consistently stopped short of threatening attacks in retaliation.
But Don't Give Pence a Chance

The World Really is Getting Sicker
In a study published Monday, Mora and his colleagues at the University of Hawaii canvassed tens of thousands of studies to analyze the global impacts of climate change on infectious diseases that affect humans. They determined that nearly 220 infectious diseases — 58% of the total studied — had become bigger threats because of climate hazards.
“Systems have been evolving for millions of years and now humans have come along and changed things,” Mora said. “We are punching nature, but nature is punching us back.”
The study, which ultimately analyzed more than 3,200 scientific works, is one of the most thorough examinations of climate change’s overall impact on diseases worldwide.

Who Do You Believe?
The prospect of a nuclear catastrophe sparked growing international alarm Monday after shelling attacks hit a Russian-controlled power plant in Ukraine that is almost twice the size of Chernobyl.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for international inspectors to be given access to the sprawling nuclear site as fears grew of a disaster after the weekend strikes left the plant damaged but still operational.
“Any attack [on] a nuclear plant is a suicidal thing,” he said Monday in Tokyo after attending a ceremony in Hiroshima to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the world’s first atomic bombing.
Russia and Ukraine have traded accusations over who is responsible for attacks on the plant, which is the largest in Europe.
Ukraine said the Soviet-era site was hit by Russian shelling on Friday and Saturday and has called for the plant to be demilitarized.
The Russian attacks caused damage to several buildings, putting one reactor offline and raising the threat of radiation leaks and fires, according to Energoatom, Ukraine’s national energy company.
Russia's defense ministry said it was Ukrainian artillery that hit the plant, damaging a high-voltage power line that served the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.
NBC News has not verified the claims of either side.
Whoever It Is, STOP SHELLING THE NUCLEAR PLANT!!

The QOP Just Lost the Diabetic Vote
Republican senators on Sunday voted down a cap on the price of insulin in the private market, removing it from Democrats' sweeping climate and economic package.
Democrats had tried to preserve the provision to cap insulin costs at $35 for private insurers, but that vote failed 57-43, with seven Republicans voting with them to keep the insulin cost cap in the bill, three short of what was needed.
The insulin cap is popular, with 61% of likely voters supporting it strongly according to polling by Data for Progress, and Democratic leaders on Sunday wasted no time in attacking Republicans for their vote.

Putin Takes the Bait
With Ukraine’s relentless trumpeting of a forthcoming offensive in Kherson, Russia has taken the bait and rushed around 60% of its total forces to the region.
Russia has around 120 BTGs in the country (individual size and strength varies by BTG). There are an estimated 22 around Kherson, 27 between the east bank of the Dnipro river and Melitopol, and 17 south of Zaporizhzhia and southern Donbas. That is 66 deployed to the south, or over half the total. Def Mon has an unconfirmed report claiming that Russia’s current strength in or around Ukraine is 175,000 troops, 1,461 tanks, 3,295 armored personnel carriers, 1,488 barrel artillery, 710 rocket artillery, and 80 missile launchers. About 25% of those are in combat reserves (refitting, rotated out), with another 10% severely undermanned and in a second reserve.
For context, Russia invaded Ukraine with around 190,000 troops, plus another 34,000 from its Donbas proxies. Before the invasion, Russia supposedly had 2,800 active tanks, plus around 10,000 in reserve. The Oryx list of visually confirmed Russian losses stands at 931, while Ukraine claims 1,800 destroyed. If DefMon’s report is real and accurate, that means only around 123,000 Russians are left in combat-capable units. And remember that only about 15-30% of troops are actually in combat roles. It takes a lot of support troops (like all those mean loading and unloading supply trucks) to make an army work.
Russia is using four ferries to move military equipment, two by the Antonovsky bridge, and another two hidden in a river nearby. The OSINT (open source intelligence) guys have ferreted out those latter two. Here’s one of them in action:
It almost behooves Ukraine to allow Russia to continue flooding vehicles into the Kherson region before fully closing the trap. Even as is, it’s perplexing Russia would reinforce without an easy way to supply those forces. On paper, 22 BTGs would means 220 tanks, 880 armored personnel carriers, several hundred artillery and rocket guns, and around 20,000 men. How are they supposed to feed all of that (men and guns) with four freakin’ ferries? Perhaps Russia has other surreptitious means of resupply, and they can certainly fly goods in via helicopter. But that’s an inefficient way to support the Russian way of war—leveling the opposition with thousands of artillery shells per day. Heck, it’s not even about efficiency, but capability. It might actually be impossible
Ukraine is working the major bridges, preventing Russia from repairing them. The barges will be harder to hit, especially if they move around enough, but they are nevertheless vulnerable. Ukraine is working hard to degrade Russian air defenses in the region, which would allow TB2 Bayraktar drones and the Ukrainian Air Force to operate closer to river and any barges moving equipment and supplies.

No Abortions? No Doctors. No Jobs.
Physician recruiters are having trouble filling positions, not only ob-gyn, but other specialties as well. One recruiter was turned down by 20 doctors, who did not want to practice in a red state. One doctor had a three word answer: “Roe vs. Wade.” Resident physicians are not seeking employment in red states. Medical students are preparing to look elsewhere for residencies.
This will have an enormous negative impact on health care for all, but especially for women in rural areas
None of the recruiters had encountered a single physician seeking to practice in a state because it had banned abortion.
================= Indiana-based pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly announced in a statement obtained by The Hill on Saturday that it would look to expand employment growth outside the state following the passage of a near-total ban on abortion.
We are concerned that this law will hinder Lilly’s – and Indiana’s – ability to attract diverse scientific, engineering and business talent from around the world,” the company added
“As a global company headquartered in Indianapolis for more than 145 years, we work hard to retain and attract thousands of people who are important drivers of our state’s economy. Given this new law, we will be forced to plan for more employment growth outside our home state,” the company concluded.

Good Grief. He Was Reading Something Aloud!
Oklahoma assistant head football coach Cale Gundy announced his resignation Sunday after using offensive language during a film session last week.
Gundy, who had been with the program as an assistant since 1999, made the announcement in a social media post on Sunday, and the school confirmed it with a statement shortly thereafter.
Gundy apologized in his post and explained why he resigned. He said he noticed a player was distracted while he was supposed to be taking notes, so he picked up the athlete’s iPad and read the words on the screen aloud. He acknowledged that he said a word that he “should never — under any circumstance — have uttered,” and said he was “horrified” when he realized what he had done.
“What I said was not malicious; it wasn’t even intentional,” Gundy said. “Still, I am mature enough to know that the word I said was shameful and hurtful, no matter what my intentions.”

Scary StuffSterilization Laws Are Still on the Books — and Pose New Dangers Post-RoeWith Roe v. Wade being nullified on the basis of a narrowed Fourteenth Amendment, it is imperative to remember the ways in which, when it is not providing equal protection under the law, the Fourteenth Amendment has been weaponized as a tool of oppression and state control. More than 60,000 people were forcibly sterilized in the wake of the Buck ruling. This century, under the Trump administration, immigrant women were detained and carved out through medically unnecessary hysterectomies.
